FUNDED BY YOUR MANDATORY
ACTIVITY FEE AS DISTRIBUTED
BY THE
STUDENT GOVERNMENT ASSOCIATION
Volume 46
Number 1
August 18, 1975
First of all, 1 would like to welcome
back all returning sophomores, and
welcome to Farmingdale all incoming fresh-men.
I hope all of you had a good summer,
and are ready to return to school.
During this upcoming year, you will be
hearing alot about S.G.A. and its connec-tion-
with other student organizations.
Before there are any questions that might
be asked too late, I would like to cover
some of the things that S.G.A. does.
S.G.A. (Student Government) Associa-tion)
is a group of concerned students that
want to make student life as enjoyable
and rewarding as possible. S.G.A. funds
all student activities on campus, either
fully or partially.
The fully funded groups are: Rambler
(newspaper), W.A.T.C. (radio station).
Which brings me to my next point. Who
governs all the ^oups?
The answer is students. It is only natural
for students to govern their own money.
Aside from governing the activity fee,
S.G.A. also serves a very important function.
We work for the students. By this I mean
that we try to help you in any way possible.
S.G.A. has committees that work on such
things as trying to improve campus lighting;
helping you with a problem you may have
with a teacher; fighting a traffic ticket you
feel is unfair, etc. There is also the S.G.A.
Book Exchange, which lets you buy or sell
used books and get a better deal then you

of what S.G.A. does. But like all organiza-tions,
we need people to become members.
If you feel you want to become a member
of S.G.A., you can join in two ways.
The first is to run for a position in the
S.G.A. Senate. This is the student body that
budgets and distributes the activity fee, and
also works for the rights of students. It is
comprised of four students from each divi-sion
(two freshmen and two sophomores),
the Executive Board of S.G.A., and represen-tatives
of the fully funded units.
If you want to run for a Senate position,
simply come to the S.G.A. Office, Room
160 in Roosevelt Hall and fill out an appli-cation.
Campus wide elections will be held
in October.
The second way is to go to the S.G.A.
Office and sign up to be a committee mem-ber,
or to work for SASU.
It may sound like S.G.A. is all work and
no fun, but like any other club, we also have
fun (parties, basketball games, etc.). So, if

Islander (yearbook), C.U.B. (College Union
Board, Ram Players (drama club), and
intercollegiate sports. Besides these ^oups,
each and every special interest club is also
eligible for money.
Now S.G.A. funds all these groups, but
where does the money come from? It comes
from you and me, and every other student
in school. Every semester, when you are
registering, you pay a Student Activity Fee
(this semester it is $35). This money is
turned over to S.G.A. who deposits it with
the Faculty Student Association (F.S.A).
Then as needed, S.G.A. draws on the money
to pay for the already mentioned groups,
as well as using the money for other pur-poses
(such as funding the Alumni Associa-tion,
and supporting the Recreation Center).
This years budget is $330,005.50 and it
is just student monies. The State does not
contribute any money to S.G.A. at all.
would at the campus Book Store. Twice
a year, we sponsor a blood drive, and last
year we were able to help a leukemia victim
live without worrying about where he was
going to get enough blood from. If you
need advice as to what your legal rights are,
come to S.G.A. and ask. An important
thing to remember is that even though we
are students, we are people and should
be treated that way.
Another service S.G.A. offers is Purchase
Power. You can buy a car $100 above deal-ers
cost, and buy appliances at similar dis-counts.
This is done with the help of SASU
(Student Association of the State Univer-sity).
Being a member of SASU entitles all
Farmingdale students to these discounts.
SASU is also a lobbying group, they lobby
for student rights in the legislature in
Albany.
All of this information is just an outline
you want to get involved, do it now and
don't miss anything.
I wish all of you a successful and enjoy-able
year.
Yours in service,
MARK D. NATELSON
