MY PEOPLE OPPRESSED
My people are rising to their
feet;
for we have had our fill of
defeat.
We are rising to take our
stand
in this strong and op-pressing
land.
To do our thing the way we
should.
and not to be misunderstood.
That we have been for too
long oppressed,
and now we want our
freedom at last.
We are ready to take our
place
in this mighty human race.
This is why I am proud to say
that we will fight until that
day.
I am proud to be what I am
PROUD TO BE A PUERTO
RICANH!
My name is Joseph San-tiago.
and I would like to
make a contribution to the
"LATINOS" and everyone
here at Farmingdale.
The poem, "My People Op-pressed"
was written during
one of my stays in jail. But

the ages of 9 through 13. on

and was mtroduced to heroin
by a friend. Then I went to the
youth house, on probation,
and to Otisville State Train-ing
School for Boys. At the
ages of 13 through 15 I was in
a detention home on Rikers
Island, 16 through 10 I was
hooked on cocaine and
heroin very badly, at 20
through 24, back in jail for
the sales of drugs, 24 to 25,
sentenced to five ^ years

wasn't an animal or some
freak of nature, and that I had
a mind . my mind, and that I
was a huoian'being, a person.

that. All my life I've been
treated as a herded animal
from'pen to pen, institution

frightened and did what I
could best, run away back to
the anim%l world. I stayed
away from the Phoenix
House for three weeks put
myself through torture and
then returned on my own.
