E REAL STORY
S.D.Cox
At the end of the last
semester it was announced
that the student newspaper
RAMBLER would cease
publication. This cahie as a
shock to most students as
RAMBLER had just recently
received: a supplementary
budget from S.G.A.. This and
several other discrepancies
initiated an S.G.A. inves-tigation
into the causes of
RAMBLER'S cessation. The
main purpose of the inves-tigation
was to determine if
there were monies left for the
resumption of publication.
The initial investigation
showed that most of the
monies were indeed gone, and
a good percentage spent on the
last Christmas issue. The
Christmas issue cost over $4,-
500.00, (it seems bills a r e still
coming in). The interesting
thing is that of the almost 6000
copies printed at a dollar a
copy, close to half; a r e still
ready for distribution next
year. As the investigation con-tinued
it was discovered that
besides the questionable
management practice there
w e r e a r e a ' s such as
equiptment purchases where
severe irregularities were
t a k i n g place. Camera
equipment such a r lenses
and filters were purchased
when the RAMBLER did not
own any camera's on which
this equiptment could be used.
As of today much of this
equiptment is missing. The
best example is a 200mm
telephoto lens valued at
$200.00. This lens is now mis-sing;
it's wherabouts have
never been known since its
purchase.
The camara equiptment
was never inventoried. TTiis
has made accountabillity of
t h e s e items almost im-possible.
T h e R A M B L E R photo
budget was three times that of
the yearbook while its produc-tion
of was a fraction of
yearbook's.
It is difficult to explain how
much money was wasted on
useless items; items with no
r e l a t i o n to | newspapers
prodution, and those items
that were used for production
were far in excess of any
reasonable amount.
The seriousness of this can-not
be over emphasized.
Student who are in trust of
other student monies must be
above reproach. If not, no fun-ding
system can be expected
to function effectively. There
must be trust between
students. If students can have
faith in any group it must be
themselves. Students policing
students is not acceptable.
There is little enough time or
manpower now' available to
waste it on such childish tac-tics.
An event which only recen-tly
came to light is the misap-propriate
us of requisitions.
Lenses were purchased by
RAMBLER for the typeset-ting
machine. '.The local
camera store cannot ,doesn't
and did not sell these lenses to
the RAMBLER by their own
admission. The equiptment
that was purchased has never
been discovered. An advertis-ing
check was also used to pay
for non-S.G.A. purchased
equiptment at the' same
camera store.
The investigation continues
at this time. All in all an in-credable
story. Too bad its
fact and not fiction.
