A few classes in the
lounges of Memorial and
Alumni Halls still remain a
result of misinterpretation of
"current trends". Earlier, as
many as ten classes a day
were held in the dormitory
lounges. Pressure from the
Interdormitory Council and
dorm students... (such as "get
your ass out of here",
scribbled on a blackboard),
appear to have brought about
quick results-pressure that
s h o u l d n ' t have been
necessary.
It all started because
years ago, Farmingdale
(Aggie), like most state
schools anticipated, a great
surge in students living on
campus. So they built
dormitories left and right.
But, they were wrong.
Resident students went
down...way down. Last year,
Farmingdale h H over 150
empty beds. At $50 per student
per year, they were losing alot
of money. So a mandate came
down from Albany .-use the
dorms.make money.
Grandiose ideas were
planned across the state. One
school invited senior citizens
to use the dorms as low-cost
housing. Farmingdale
planned to move all sorts of
offices into the two dorms-
.Alumni and Memorial Halls.
Cornell s offices. E.O.C.. and
various other administrative
types. All to pay rent. The
room in the new dorms..
The classes will soon be
out of Alumni and Memorial
Halls. They're consolidating
other classes to make room. A
few are being placed in the
new Media building, Greenly
Hall, otherwise scheduled to
open in January. But there
are several classes in the
Dining Hall Lounge. And the
administration says they will
remain. It seems there are no
empty classes on campus
between.pine and one o'clock.
Overcrowding is
rampant. Farmingdale is
designed to handle 5,800
students. Currently there are
6,200. One can argue that
those e.xtra 400 shouldn't be
here. But, maybe they should.
This is a state supported
institution. Maybe it has an
obligation to teach as many as
it can. Maybe..if they kept to
limits I wouldn't be here.
Next Year, with no new
facilities, Farmingdale will
accept even more students. It
will be worse. Though far
away, relief is in sight.
A new building with
offices and classes for the
health & science departments
will be ready for 1978. Mr.
Zulli. vice-president of
.•\cademic Affairs, gave me
mu ch of the a bo e
information. He asked for
constructive criticism...
O.K fine.
Be careful. Mr. Zulli, we
are people not numbers
used as classrooms.
Sometime between last
June, and the time when
admissions accepted the
largest freshmen class in
S.U.N.Y, the administration
realized they were wrong.
Dorm students weren't down.
They were up...to a new
record. Alumni and Memorial
Halls were switched back to
regular dorms and were soon
filled. Some rooms designed
to live two have three to a
There is a very wide line
between overcrowding
resulting in inconvenience,
and overcrowding resulting in
inadequate education.
