SGA DISBANDED
photos by Steve cox
On Wednesday night, May
9, President Megan McCabe
exercised her constitutional
powers and disbanded the
Farmingdale College
Student Association Senate.
In lieu of the senate, she has
a p p o i n t e d a special
committee (which she has the
power to d6) to carry out the
a f f a i r s of the student
government for the remainder
of the academic year.
The meeting, which could
be decribed as dumbfounding,
was interupted by certain ex
senators making out landish
remarks regarding the
integrity of the executive
board.
.The decision to disband
the senate was reached by a
unanimous decision of the
e x e c u t i v e board of
theF.C.S.A.(all chairmen of
SG A's standing Boards)and
the executive board of the
SGA.
TO THE STUDENTS OF THE
FARMINGDALE CAMPUS
My actions taken at last
night's senate meeting were in
the best interest of the
students. It is necessary at
this timeto establish next
years budget which must be
taken extremely serious.
Political games are played at
every level and the students
are no exception. It is too bad
things mustbe resolved in
such a manner and much
critisism will follow. The
constitution allows me to
establish a
committee in abscense of a
senate. The committee was
established by the executive
board and NOTme, alone.
The controversy that will
develop above representation
will be interesting. Several
senatorsthat did not get
appointed to the new
committeedid NOT express
concern about being unable
to represent their
constituents any longer,
i heywere mainly concerened
that a special interest group
was not being represented.
The committee was chosen for
representation and because
the students have worked for
the BEST interest of the
students.
I'm concerned with the
dilemma we are in and am the
first to admit it is a sad
situation. Idid the best I could
do to get STUDENTS concerns
back into the sinate's mind
and I did the best to properly
interpret the powers granted
me by the p r e s e nt
constitution. Ihope these
actions will be looked at as
objectivly as possible and that
the students will be pleased
with my ddecision and realize
it is in the best interestof the
students.
