STATE UNIVERSITY AGRICULTURAL AND TECHNICAL COLLEGE
FARMINGDALE, L. I., N. y.
VOLUMI: XXXVI NO. 6 FEBRUARY 8, 1966
John Howard Griffin
by Evie Lolos
On January 20, 1966 we had
the honor to have as our guest
Mr. John Howard Griffin, a most
distinguished writer and lec-turer.
Mr. Griffin received most
of his education in France where
he attended high school, college,
medical school and university.
He majored in sociology, anthro-pol(^,
philosophy, and finally
specialized in psychiatry. He
holds a certificate of stucfy in
philosophy and theology, plus a
"licence et lettres" which falls
between a master's and doctorate
degree.
Mr. Griffin wrote his first
two books in France - a musi-cologlcal
book which was never
translated and The Devil Rides
Outside which is a translation
from the French version. He then
continued his writing with 4
novels, a cultural history of
Texas, several social sciences
books and Black Like Me.
In his lecture Mr. Griffin dis-cussed
his latest book. Black
Like Me. Although a Southerner,
his stay in France made him
understand racism much better
through the Nazi treatment of
the Jews. After a 20 year period
of study of races, Mr. Griffin
believes that people should not
be distinguished by race or creed,
but as men. It was not completely
his own idea to change his skin
pigment and live as a Nego. In-stead,
he was challenged by other
Negroes to attempt such a ven-ture
because they claimed that
it was the only way anyone could
understand the racial problem
facing the Negro today.
Mr. Griffin has worked very
closely with Roy Wilkins and
Dr. King. He is a dedicated
man, a "Loner/' who cooper-ates
with all but belongs to no
Individual civil rights groups.

"You will be interest-ed

and we are
satisfied that the cafe-teria
is being run-in the
best possible manner.
Stool specimens from
a representative num-ber
of students, includ-ing
the known hospital
case were found to
be negative for patho-genic
organisms. In ad-dition,
no organisms of
significance were ob-tained
from samples of
the remaining food from
