School Bd. Seat
Stanley Weckstein of
Massapequa Park, ah assistant
principal of a Queens high school,
has filed his petition seeking the
vacant seat on the Farmingdale
Board of Education in next
month's election.
Stan and . Sheila Weckstein
moved to Massapequa Park nine
and a half years ago. They have
three children. Two of the
children attend Farmingdale
schools. Stan graduated from the
State University at Oswego in
1961 and has a B. S. degree. He
has a M. S. degree from the New
York University in 1966.
He has worked for the City of
New York for the past fifteen
years. At the present time he is
an assistant principal at Beach
Channel High School in Queens.
Stanley Wickstein
the elimination of 29 additional
teachers. According to the union,
62 teachers have received
dismissal notices.
The board has dropped 55
teaching positions because of the
declining enrollment through
elimination of the job security
clause, cutting back on
elementary foreign language and
guidance counselors and nurse-teachers.
The union wants the cut
programs restored and new
programs instituted to provide
more teacher jobs.
The board contends that the
community cannot afford the
additional tax increases that
would be necessary to meet the
demands of the union. The aim of
the board is to keep the school
budget for the coming year as
near to a zero tax increase as
possible. They feel that since the
public has eliminated all the
board members who favored the
teachers' union demands in the
past, they have a mandate from
the public to hold the line.
The union has charged the
board with deliberately
provoking the strike and has
asked for investigation by the
Senate Education Committee
headed by Sen. Leon Giuffeda.
The conduct of the striking
teachers has become another
issue with the public during the
week that the strike has been in
force. Complaints from both
parents and students have been
made to the Post about the foul
language and threatening tactics
used by striking teachers on the
picket lines blocking the schools.
There have been reports of
teaches actually to fail students
in their courses if they crossed
the picket lines to enter their
schools. Teachers and substitutes
