BELLE'S BIG BLOW provided Farmingdale with many uplifting
experiences such as the one above. This huge old tree at the corner of
Main St. and Carmans Rd. took a piece of sidewalk and power lines
Youth Council Goes To Shea
On Wednesday, August 4, it was
" Yea at Shea." AU the centers
midget Mets marveled as the
miraculous Mets meted out a
magnificent mortification,
mopping up a 4- 0 massacre over
Montreal. The matadors of the
post- meridan maneuvers were
Grote and Millan with multiple
base merits. Masteroms in the
meadows were made by many
with their mitts.
Merriment and mirth was
made for the multitudes when
Torre mortalized the myth that
he may never manage to steal the
middle base. ( He was un-mistakeably
missiled out from
the mound!)
On Friday, August 6, one of the
big events of the Main Street
summer season was held against
the fence of the playground. Of
course it was the Penny Carnival.
Many prizes were won by the
happy boys and girls, with some
youngsters so loaded down that
they could hardly walk. Paul
Rodriguez alone won close to 42
prizes. Games such as a number
wheel, ring toss, cards in the hat,
get the penny on the plate, get the
penny in the glass in the fish tank,
make- up by Miss Linda, a clown
throw, bombs away, and a
refreshment stand were there for
the playing.
The Basketball Championships
are down to the finals. The
playoff game for the 5th and 6th
grade will be between Albany
Ave. and Woodward Parkway,
each with a 9- 1 record. Woodward
Parkway is going to come out
with something in both divisions.
Their 7th and 8th grade team is
tied with Mill Lane for the title.
Both playoff games were held on
Tuesday, but due to time the
results will be in the next issue.
The Howitt pool has completed
their third swimming session and
here are the " fish" results: 53
Poliwogs, 71 Flounders, 43 Fish,
36 Flying Fish and 18 Sharks.
Hurricane Belle was the cause
of the elimination of many events
on Monday for Youth Council
activities. At Northside the Jr.
Olympics had to be cancelled
because the water in the field was
not deep enough for swimming
and too deep for running!
The second Adventurer's excursion
had to be cancelled also
because of excessive dampness.
Hurricane Belle paid the
Farmingdale area a visit late
Monday night and hurried
through on her northbound
journey. Belle arrived at about
11: 30 p. m. and left early Tuesday
morning. Although the storm was
not nearly as strong as anticipated.
Belle left her unmistakable
calling card of
overturned trees, broken
branches and downed wires.
Belle wrote her name in the
minds of the local firemen with
indelible ink as the storm
. produced call overlapping call
for downed* and sparking* wires.'
trees hitting houses and house
fires. ,
South Farmingdale volunteers
answered two house fire calls
during the peak of the storm The
first at 119 Radcliffe Ave. and the
second at 16 Paula Drive.
Belle's downpour* of rain
caused flooding problems
throughout the area as streets
ran deep with water in low areas
it posed an interesting problem
for the firemen as they shuttled
from call to call. " Motor Avenue
and Heisser Lane completely
flooded out," said one call over
