Residents Protest Zone
Change By Babylon Bd.
Over three hundred Farmingdale
residents jammed the
meeting room of the Babylon
Town Board Tuesday night after
walking a picket line in front of
the Town Hall protesting a zoning
change that would allow multiple
dwelling units to be built next to
their one family homes.
The residents, mostly members
of the Francis Manor Civic
Association, thwarted plans of
Semour Yanowicz last fall to
construct an industrial park in
the 16 acre site behind Mill Lane
Junior High School. The builder
obtained a change of zoning on
the property from light industrial
to MA, which permits multiple
housing. The homeowners consider
this change as bad as, if not
worse than light industry.
Aaron Barnett, supervisor of
the Town of Babylon, told the
spectators that the town board
was instructed by the court to
seek a compromise on the zoning
of the land and the MA change
was considered a compromise.
The residents pointed out that
the last compromise plan they
saw prior to the change in zoning
called for half of the site nearest
the private homes to be zoned
Residential B and the remaining
half near Route 110 to be MA. The
change making the entire site MA
was done without consideration
for the Farmingdale residents.
The local group also protested
that only two members of the
Babylon Town Board showed up
for a meeting on the zoning
change, which was called by the
civic association at " the convenience
of the board."

Carman Asks
0TB Seek
New Site
Oyster Bay Town Councilman
Gregory W. Carman is calling on
the Nassau Off- Track Betting
Corp. to seek a more suitable
location for a Farmingdale
betting parlor than the one
currently under consideration.
According to Carman, the OTB
officials are considering leasing a
vacant store on Hempstead
Turnpike near East Gate, adjacent
to a cocktail lounge. " I
believe this would be a very poor
selection for several reasons, one
especially, the traffic conditions
of the area," Carman said.
He explained that the small
row of storefronts are on the
border of a highly populated
residential area. " With the
traffic generated by the stores
currently operating at the
location, residents are already
living with above- normal traffic
on their streets. Adding a betting
parlor would make the situation
dangerous," Carman said.
At that location, Carman noted,
vehicles have to attempt to
merge into a heavily travelled
section of Hempstead Turnpike in
order to exit from the limited
parking area. As the parking lot
becomes backed up due to the
difficulties of the traffic condition,
Carman said that drivers
go through the surrounding
residential streets in search of an
