Special Water District
Gets TOB Public Hearing
Farmingdale Board of Education voted Monday night
to offer the Main Street School for sale, if the school
district's voters approve. The proposition will be added
to the ballot for the June election.
The Main Street School, which was phased out and
leased to BOCES three years ago, was once Far-mingdale's
only school. It was built inr 1920 with an
addition constructed in 1929. The building now contains
75,000 feet of floor space on three floors, plus a
basement, and sits on five acres of land.
A minimum price for the
building has yet to be determined
by the Board of Education. The
board has engaged two appraisers
to determine the market
value of the building and
property.
The ballot proposition will
contain no date for the sale of _._
building, merely authorize tht
school board to sell it. BOCES
signed a five year lease with the
school district three years ago
and the lease requires a one year
notice if it is to be terminated
prior to its fulfillment.
The property is zoned for
school use at present and adjacent
land is zoned both commercial
( along Main Street) and
residential. Rezoning of the
property would be determined by
the Village of Farmingdale.
The Main Street School
Building was maintained as a
school district property, administrators
said, as a safety

The purpose of the district is to
help finance the cost of installing
new water supply pipes
throughout this proposed district.
Since the water supply is from
the Village of Farmingdale, and
that government has been instructed
to replace these old
existing pipes by the Board of
Health, it is necessary to consider
the creation of this new district to
allow the Town of Oyster Bay to
provide extended financing of
these required improvements.
These Improvements are
needed, according to the Board of
Health, because the existing
pipes can no longer carry the
water supply necessary for the
health and safety of the community.
For example, the fire
protection equipment servicing
the area can pump about 1,000
gallons of water per minute, but
the existing pipes may only carry
200 gallons per minute. If there
were a need for the fire equip-
