Music Students Vote Boycott
In protest to the decision of the
Farmingdale Board of Education
to continue the " use fee" for
musical instruments in the school
district, members of the high
school band voted Tuesday not to
participate in any further school
musical functions.
If the students enforce their
voted boycott, the band will not
play at the school's football
games and may force the cancelation
of a " Green Room
Players" musical and two concerts
scheduled by the Village
Bicentennial Committee.
A large group of parents and
students appeared before the
school board at their regular
meeting Monday night to protest

the $ 6 " use fee" for rental of
musical instruments by first year
music students.
Students taking music after the
first year, according to the
previous policy, were to buy or
rent their instruments from
private sources.
Music teachers present at the
board meeting stated they had
instruments available that could
be provided for students beyond
the first year level. Members of
the board said those instruments
could be issued to other music
students for the same $ 6 " use
fee."
In protesting the musical instrument
" use fee", parents and
students pointed out that the
music students were being
discriminated against, since no
fee is charged for the use of any
other district equipment such as
laboratory supplies, typewriters,
sports equipment, etc.
Still others said the new change
in the ruling to allow more advanced
students to rent extra
instruments at the $ 6 rate was
costing them additional money,
since some had already signed
contracts for outside private
rentals of their instruments.
The school board called for a
vote and approved the $ 6 " use
fee" by a 6- 1 margin, leading to
the Tuesday vote by the student
musicians.
Village Leaf
Pick- up Slated
The Public Works Department
of the Village of Farmingdale will
begin its annual chore of picking
up leaves on October 20. Pick- up
will be on a daily basis, Monday
thru Saturday, from 8 a. m. to 4
p. m.
To facilitate the task, the
homeowners are asked to observe
some simple " Do's &
Don'ts."
DON'T BUILD LARGE PILES
- Small piles along the curb are
easier and quicker for the
vacuum to handle.
DON'T pile any leaves near
storm water basins. The first rain
will plug up the basin and flood
the area.
DON'T mix rubbish or tree
limbs with the leaves.
DON'T put your leaves out in
the street immediately after a
pick- up. DO wait a few days. The
trucks are working the Village
from EAST to WEST and it does
take some time to get back.
DO NOT put out branches or
limbs until after December 1st.
The trucks are busy with leaf
pick- up.
Try To Revive
Gvic Group
Efforts are being made by a
group of interested residents to
reactivate the West Farmingdale
Civic Association. This
organization was very active
several years ago when the
homes in West Farmingdale
were first built. As many
homeowners will remember, it
represented them well in civic
matters, as well as sponsoring
many children's activities and
