SANTA CLAUS ' ARRIVED in Farmingdale Saturday afternoon and gave the
Farmingdale Merchants Association a hand in selecting their grand prize winners
in front of the Village Hall. Hie winning numbers in the merchants' free drawing
for a trip for two to Bermuda or Puerto Rico and cash gift certificates are listed in
this week's edition. Santa will be making his rounds in Farmingdale's downtown
shopping area every afternoon from now to Christmas, chatting with youngsters
and handing out candy canes.

Student Critical
In Axe Beating
A 21 year old Farmingdale
student was listed in critical
condition Wednesday morning at
Mid- Island Hospital as a result of
being beaten with an axe
Tuesday evening in a dispute
over a girl.
Eighth precinct police identified
the victim as James H.
Nostrand, 21, of 17 Fairview
Road, Farmingdale.
According to police, Nostrand
was dating a former girlfriend of
Louis Shavell, 22, of the Bronx.
The two college students met at
the Bethpage Motel at 4: 30 p. m.
Tuesday to discuss the situation.
At the motel, police said,
Shavell beat Nostrand in the face,
head and back with an axe. He
then drove the victim to Mid-
Island Hospital, Bethpage, and
dropped him off on the lawn near
the emergency room door, where
he was discovered and admitted
in critical condition.
At 6: 20 p. m. Shavell turned
himself in at 8th precinct
headquarters. He was charged
with attempted murder.
Crash Claims Daler
A 30 year old Farmingdale man
was killed in West Babylon this
" past week when his car was
struck by another vehicle that
police said Was going the wrong
way on the westbound section of
the Sunrise Highway service
road.
Richard B. Califano of 60
Williams Street, Farmingdale,
was westbound oh the service
road; police said, when he
collided with an eastbound
vehicle driven by Cecil Rich, 46,
of Jamaica, Queens.
Police reported the North
Babylon Fire Department
Rescue team had to use power
tools to cut Califano out of his
wrecked car and took him to
Good Samaritan Hospital, where
he was pronounced dead!
Rich, police reported, was
admitted to the hospital with a
broken jaw. He was charged with
driving while intoxicated and for
operating a vehicle in the wrong
direction on a divided highway.
Resident Heads Town Dept.
Frank DeStefano of Farmingdale,
who has served as
Public Information Officer for
the Town for the past two years,
has been appointed to head the
Public Information Office, it was
announced by Supervisor John
W. Burke.
DeStefano, 30, replaces Donald
W. Kehoe, who resigned to accept
a position with the Nassau County
Off- Track Betting Corp.
Before joining the Town Public
Information Office, DeStefano
had been the Press Secretary
with the Nassau County
Republican Committee. Prior to
that he worked for the Long
Island Press, where he started as
copy boy while attending evening
classes to gain a B. A. from
Queens College of the City
University of New York. Before
leaving the Press in 1971,
DeStefano had been promoted to
general assignment reporter
covering Nassau County for
almost four years.
He lives at 25 Clinton Street
with his wife, Anne, and their two
children.
Massapequa Park Girl
National 4- H Winner
A 17- year- old Massapequa
Park girl, who became an expert
on water safety and first aid, has
been named one of eight national
winners in the 4- H safety
program.
Karen Mineo, of 76 Aster St.,
Massapequa Park, received a
$ 1,000 scholarship from General
Motors, sponsor of the 4- H safety
program. »
The eight winners, selected by
Cooperative Extension Service,
were presented with their awards
at the 33rd National 4- H Congress
in Chicago, Dec. 1- 5
Miss Mineo, daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. Sebastian Mineo, is a
high school senior and plans a.
