Back To School Minus Austerity
Voters Approve Budget
Farmingdale school children will be going back to
school next Thursday, September 3, and face a normal
program, with regular transportation without austerity.
The voters approved the third proposed budget in their
vote last Thursday by 3,380 to 2,939.
The total vote on the budget was recorded as 6,470, but
adding the two figures together for the ayes and the
nays shows 101 votes not counted.
While the unaccounted for While the budget is increasing,
votes would not change the enrollments continue to

outcome of this budget vote, it
could make a difference in a
closer race. " Apparently," according
to John Regan, assistant
to the superintendent, " some
people don't know how to
properly operate the voting
machine. They don't realize that
they must leave the voting lever
down with the white X showing
above their selection until they
throw the big lever to open the
curtains."
If a voter pushes the voting
lever down and back up again
before opening the curtains, he
did not cast a vote.
The $ 27,565,758 budget will
increase the tax rate in the
district to $ 17.64 in Oyster Bay
and $ 23.94 in the Babylon portion.
That represents an increase of
$ 2.31 and $ 1.48 respectively.
decrease. Going back to school in
the district will be 11,019
students, compared with 11,604
last September. The majority of
the decline in the enrollment is in
the elementary schools, with only
a slight decline at the junior high
level and the high school
remaining almost unchanged.
It is interesting to note that
while the high school graduated
over 1000 seniors this past June,
the new kindergarten class has
only 700 registered.
Since 1969 the district has
dropped 96 professional positions
( 14 this year) and 19 non
professional positions.
A citizens advisory committee
has been appointed to look into
the school building use in the face
of the declining enrollments and
submit their findings to the
Board of Education.
The Farmingdale Merchants'

Village Issues Vandal Warning
In view of the extensive damage
that is being committed on the
premises of the Municipal Garage
at Ridge and Ketcham Lane,
Mayor John T. Hallahan and the
Board of Trustees have indicated
that prosecution will follow if any
trespassers are caught on the
premises.
Several thousands of dollars
damage has occurred over a
period of months and the Nassau
County Police Department has
been ordered to apprehend any
individual found within the limits
of the fenced- in area.
Due to such malicious vandalism
and the incurring cost to
the taxpayers, the Board
members make a special appeal
to the residents in the area to
alert the Nassau County Police
Department if they observe any
activity going on in the area,
particularly in the evening hours.
The possibility of further harm
to any individual in the area
would be by contact with the high
voltage electrical equipment
which is situated on the premises.
Tho- Board of Trustees hopes
that this message will prevent
any further intrusion of the
property by unauthorized persons.
HEADS AND TAILS: While work on the A- 10 close air- support aircraft
program continues to build up at the Fairchild Republic Company
plant in Farmingdale, other programs, such as production of aft
fuselage sections for the McDonnell Douglas F- 4 Phantom fighter,
supplement the company's manufacturing activities. Photo shows
workers recently completing the 4,000th aft section the firm : ia*
produced for McDonnell Douglas.
