A Southern Baptist Moves Back Home
Once a person takes root in a locality it is hard to pack up
and leave. However, when leaving is for home with its even
deeper roots, the move often seems less difficult. Thus is
the situation with Reverend David Wilson, Pastor of the
Farmingdale Baptist Church. The Reverend will be moving
with his family to South Carolina this week.
Reverend Wilson arrived in Farmingdale February 1,
1970, from Bel- Air, Maryland. Born in Charlotte, North
Carolina, the Reverend is, like his neighbor Billy Graham,
a Southern Baptist. Being a Southerner he was not accustomed
to what he found here on Long Island. Reverend
Wilson remembered that his first impressions were rather
negative. He found skepticism, a lack of courtesy and a cold
shoulder; traits, perhaps, only recognized by one coming
from a different mode of living.
But, for the Reverend, running the parish was a challenge
and he found that people could be very warm and friendly if
one got to know them. This is just what the pastor did as can
be seen by his many activities in the community. He has
been Chaplain of the South Farmingdale Fire Department
for three years, a member of the Rotary Club, has worked
with the Nursing Home and helped with numerous civic
affairs. He has worked in the Baptist Church to overcome
the odds of several prejudices and beliets to bring new
members to his faith.
The time arrived, however, when the Wilsons felt it better
for them to move. The children are pleased with the aspect
of continuing their education in the South. Perhaps, the
most over- riding reason is the proximity of the Reverend's
family. It will be the first time in 17 years of marriage that
he will be this close to brothers and relatives in the area.
Reverend Wilson has accepted a pastorate at Pleasant
Grove Baptist Church, Dillon, South Carolina. He will
continue to be active in his new locale civically and
religiously. The Reverend has a fellowship with a variety of
Baptist sectors and is involved with the American Baptist
Convention among others.
The Farmingdale community displayed its feelings
toward the Reverend by giving him a farewell reception
following his final sermon at the Baptist Church last Sunday,
July 22. At least 50 firemen arrived in uniform with
their families to wish the Wilsons well.
Because there is no hierarchy to place pastors or assign
offices there is no definite successor to Reverend Wilson nor
is there any particular person to take over his duties until
one is found.
