THREE FIRES GIVE
VAMPS BUSY WEEKEND
A tire which could have threatened the entire Main Street business
community and thought to have been started by a short in electrical
wiring, caused considerable damage to the Norge Village dry
cleaning establishment located at 293 Main Street, Farmingdale on
Sunday night shortly before 10 o'clock.
The lire caused smoke damage to Medine's Men's Clothing store
next door and on the other side to Jaylor's Hair Stylist.
The Farmingdale Fire Department responded and prevented the
lire from spreading.
According to Peter Cecere of Norge Village, he expects to resume
business within one month. In the meantime he has asked his patrons
to use the coin operated facilities at Norge village located at 939 North
Broadway, North Massapequa, just south of Southern State Parkway.
The Farmingdale Fire Department also responded to a fire at 2: 30
on Sunday afternoon at apartment 11B in the Garden Apartments at
150 Secatogue Avenue, Farmingdale. The tenant was a Jes Wanber.
The fire, which was thought to have started from a television set
resulted in over $ 5,000 in damage.

Pointing up Long Island's early
history and the vast wealth of
architecturally and historically
significant structures, " Long
Island Landmarks", a 24 page
book includes the Thomas Powell
house of 33 Merritt Road
Farmingdale, built in 1700.
The book published recently by
New York State Office of
Planning Coordination, identifies
buildings and areas which
deserve special consideration in
planning because of their
" quality, uniqueness or history";
evaluates their present status
and discusses resources and
techniques for their preservation.
" It focuses on the need for
deliberate, conscious action by
public officials, businessmen and

private citizens if these legacies
of history are to survive".
According to D. David
Brandon, OPC director, the
publication was prepared as part
of the agency's responsibility for
" providing citizens of the state
with background information on
matters pertinent to good
planning."
The report stresses both " the
social values of landmarks, in
conveying aesthetic and
historical perceptions to
oncoming generations,"
" their economic values
increased property values,
improved tone in nearby business
sections and attractiveness for
vacationers and part- time
residents."

Farmingdale postmaster Leo
J. Morgan, this week announced
that in an attempt to curb the
alarming increase in the amount
of offensive materials flooding
the mails, residents may take
steps to curb the flow of offensive
advertising into their homes
under the provisions of the
Pandering Advertisement
Statute.
Under the law, each addressee
has the sole right to decide for
himself whether an Ad is
offensive. If a person receives an
advertisement which is, in his
opinion, " erotically arousing or
sexually provocative," he should
send the ad, its envelope and a
proper notice to the Postmaster
with the words, " Request for
Prohibitory Order," on the face
of the envelope.
Rezoning Hearings Mark
Village Calendar
The Board of Trustees of The
Incorporated Village of
Farmingdale will hold a public
hearing on Monday, February 16
at 8 p. m. at Village Hall on the
application to rezone a portion of
land presently in residence ' B' in
order to erect a two story office
building on the southeast corner
of West and Prospect Streets. The
applicants is the accounting firm
of Albrecht, Mamaro and
Viggiano and builder Ed Henn.
The applicant is seeking to
have the land rezoned for
business use so that it may be
considered one contiguous
parcel.
On Tuesday night the Friendly
Ice Cream store sought a
postponement for a variance
before the Board of Appeals to
approve the installs ™ of a
restaurant on the Route 109 site
formerly occupied by the
Lobsterman due to a legal
complication in the ownership of
the property.
It was learned that the Board of
Trustees had denied several
weeks ago the request for a
special use permit to build a
three story apartment at the
intersection of Prospect Place
and Conklin. The applicants had
been Wharton B. Allen Jr. and
Dominick Posillico. The permit
had been denied by the Boards
because there were too many
units for the parking provided.
Grievance Day, Tuesday,
February 17 will find the Village
Board sitting from 6 p. m. to 10
p. m. to hear grievances on tax
assessments.
Filly firemen of the South Farmingdale Fire Department battled a
lire last Thursday at the American gasoline station at Hempstead
Turnpike at Walnut Drive, West Farmingdale. According to Chief
William Blekicki, the fire was confined to the bay area of the garage
while firemen successfully battled the blaze to keep it away from the
gasoline pumps. A leaking car gas tank in the bay was thought to have
been ignited. An investigation is being conducted.
