Land Transaction Could Save $$
Councilman Edmund A. Ocker,
speaking for the Town Board,
announced that the Town of
Oyster Bay and the County of
Nassau have completed
negotiations on a complicated
land transaction that will save
the Town more than $ 110,000
while it purchases parking and
recreational land for the
residents of Bethpage.
Ocker, who initiated contact
with the County two years ago
and who has been the driving
force behind the negotiations,
said that the Town Board has
approved, by resolution on
Tuesday, March 3, authorization
for the Town Attorney to conclude
the negotiations Ocker
began.
" The people of Bethpage will
realize immediate benefits from
this transaction," Ocker said.
" One of the properties involved in
the landswap is a tract south of
the Long Island Railroad tracks
just east of Stewart Avenue that
will permit an additional 70
parking spots adjacent to the
present Town parking field.
" In addition, there are three
plots of land being turned over to
the Town which can be utilized
for recreational purposes. These
sites, which fall within the confines
of Main ( Broadway) Street
( on the west), No. Herman
Avenue ( on the east), Sophia
Street ( on the north), and the old
Vanderbilt Motor Parkway ( on
the south) can be used for passive
recreation parks in the future."
" The total appraised value of
all properties being offered to the
Town is approximately $ 232,000,"
Ocker stated in explaining the
transaction.
Once Ocker put the package
together, the Town Board had to
move quickly because the Real
Estate Department of the County
planned to offer the various
parcels for sale to the general
nublic.
