Willenbrock, Nihan Named College Vice Presidents
Dr. Charles W. Laffin, Jr.,
President of State University at
Farmingdale, announced the
appointment of three vice
presidents, two of them hailing
from Farmingdale, to his administrative
staff: Berthold D.
Willenbrock, 114 Staples Street,
Vice President for Student Affairs;
Dr. James F. Nihan, 16
Alexander Avenue, Vice
President for Continuing
Education; and Dr. Frank A.
Cipriani, Smithtown, Vice
President for Administration.
In making the appointments,
Dr. Laffin said the physical
growth of the college and its ever-expanding
involvement with
academic, student, staff and
community affairs, and the many
services that go with this
progress, make these additions to
the administration necessary.
The new appointees now join
two other vice presidnets, John
M. Purcell of Farmingdale, who
is responsible for assisting the
President with general administration
and in his absence
serves as acting president, and
Noel Palmer, Westbury, Vice
President for Urban Affairs since
April, 1970. Mr. Purcell, who
started as an instructor at
Farmingdale in 1952, has been
Vice President since 1967.
Formerly Dean of Students,
Willenbrock, in his twenty- fifth
year of service with the college,
in his new position as Vice
President of Student Affairs, is
responsible for the administration
and supervision of
the Division of Student Affairs
which includes Admissions,
Orientation of New Students,
Counseling, Housing, Financial
Aid, Special Programs,
Veteran's Affairs, Student Activities
and Placement.
An alumnus of Colgate
University, with a B. A. degree in
English Literature, Vice
President Willenbrock also holds
a Master's Degree in educational
guidance and occupational adjustment
from Teachers College
Columbia University.
Originally from Mt. Vernon,
New York, Willenbrock has had
broad teaching and guidance
experience at the elementary and
high school levels and came to
State University at Farmingdale
in 1957 as the Dean of Students-
Student Personnel Division- a
position which he has held up to
his present advancement.
In announcing Dr. Nihan's
promotion from Dean of the
Evening College to Vice
President for Continuing
Education, President Laffin said
that " the new designation more
accurately reflects the entire
scope and complexity of our
parttime educational and public
service programs and the functions
of the administrator involved."
Dr. Nihan taught in several
colleges throughout the country-
California, Massachusetts, New
York- and came to Farmingdale
in 1963 after a six- year stint as an
administrator in the SUNY
Central Office in Albany. He
received his B. A. and M. A. at Los
Angeles State College in 1953 and
1954 respectively, and hisEd. D.
