MUSIC GROUP IN DIRE NEED
OF COMMUNITY SUPPORT
A group of Farmingdale cultural leaders who recently formed a
committee to bring to Farmingdale a series of two concerts and an
opera for presentation in February, March and April, this week
issued a plea through Chairman Nancy Carman that community
financial support is needed immediately in order to insure that the
presentations can be offered as scheduled.
The committee which calls itself " Music For Farmingdale" met
this week and after a review of the subscriptions sold, it became
evident that the group will need 150 more subscribers by February 7
in order to survive. \
The cost for one person is $ 10 for all three performances to be held
at Weldon E. Howitt Auditorium. Mrs. Carman urged music lovers to
' act now'. It would be tragic to think that Farmingdale would not
support such a cultural endeavor and that the $ 950 support from New
York State Committee for the Performing Arts could not be accepted
because of music lovers not meeting the deadline.
The series of three concerts, by the Orchestra Da Camera, are
scheduled for Saturday, February 28, March 21 and April 18, the later
offering an opera by the orchestra and the Opera Da Camera. The
performances will be held in the auditorium of Weldon E. Howitt
Junior High School.
Mrs. Carman urged those who support classical music in Farmingdale
to send in $ 10 a seat subscription price even though they
may not intend to use the tickets for themselves, since the committee
can offer them to senior citizens and students who would enjoy attending
the concerts.
The guest conductor of the February 28th concert will be Lawrence
Smith with Carol Reinhart offering a trumpet solo. The program
includes Vivaldi, Haydn and Ginastera.
The second concert on Saturday March 21 will feature Herbert
Grossman as guest conductor and violin soloist, Matthew Raimondi.
The program includes Handel, Stravinky, Mozart, Grieg and Sibelius.
Carlo- Menotti's two one act operas, " The Telephone" and " The
Medium" will be performed by the Opera Da Camera including stage
sets, costuming and full orchestra on April 18. Checks should be made
payable to Music for Long Islanders and may be mailed to Treasurer,
George Schriro, 121 Prospect Street, Farmingdale, New York, 11735.
