BOARD MULLS SLASH
LIBRARY SERVICES In order to effect a deep slash in a projected $ 75,000
increase in the Farmingdale Library budget, the Library Board
agreed on Tuesday to consider a cutback in several areas
of library service for the coming fiscal year which begins on
July 1.
Under consideration is the opening of both libraries at
10 a. m. instead of 9 a. m. The elimination of professional
librarians and use of a library clerk on Sundays. The shutdown
of the Main library on Wednesday and during the month
of July. No library service on five minor holidays. Elimination
of a tax - supported art program and publication of
' Inside Your Library*. The Board is also considering a hike
of from two to three cents a day on overdue books and a charge
for the loan of a film projector for a combined overall cutback
of $ 28,820.
An additional $ 30,000 saving could be realized by an evening
and Saturday closedown of both libraries and eliminating the
use of the Bookmobile.
The Board is also considering the closing during July of
the South : Branch and Bookmobile for a $ 15,000 savings
As a result of a mail community survey held by the library,
the board voted to petition the District # 22 School Board to
place before the voters a proposition to purchase the South
Farmingdale branch library for a sum of $ 250,000 rather
than continue to rent the space for $ 25,000 a year. The
resolution was approved with Trustee Mrs. Khan Musa, Warren
Altmann and Board President Robert Callahan voting ' yes',
Trustee Carl Gorton abstaining and Trustee Dr. Albert Meyei-stein
voting ' no'. The opinion poll had showed 763 in favor;
618 against.
Burglars Make Haul
Michael Duff Inc., a plumbing front door of the business es-firm
located on 5000 Hempstead tablishment, according to Eighth
Turnpike, was burglarized of Precinct police,
tools and plumbing equipment Joseph Columbus was the corn-valued
at $ 825. plainant.
Entry was gained by forcing the
Robin Jaisle, ( left), a ninth- grader at Weldon E. Howitt Junior High School
was the individual point leader in the recent annual physical fitness contest
held in School District 22. Robin, who garnered 26 out of 28 possible
points, is pictured receiving a trophy from Youth Council Recreation Director
Tony Tonachio. Miss Jaisle has taken first place seven times in
the annual event.
