CONTROVERSIAL FILM
GETS OFFICIAL AIRING A crowd of about 250 District 22 taxpayers attended
the Board of Education meeting on Monday,
after a taxpayer- instituted show- cause court order
against the Board earlier in the day had failed to
stop John Birch Society member Edward Werner
with the Board- approved film showing of " Indoctrination
or Education following the regular
meeting.
Charles Gerston member of an anti- Birch group
called Farmingdale Action Committee for Truth,
who had criticized an earlier showing of the film
to school teachers, sought to prevent the showing
of the fi'm unless the Board allowed a film presentation
by his group on the same night. The
School Board refused the request but granted the
FACT group permission for their film showing
after the Board Meeting of March 17. The offer was
declined by FACT on the grounds that it would not
offer an opportunity to ' offset' the John Birchfilm.
The FACT group claimed the film was political in
nature was against the state law and was the beginning
of a dangerous precedent; of using school
facilities for political purposes.
About half of those present at the school board
meeting stayed to view the film and to hear
Edward Werner and Carl Gorton allude to two
books ' Land of the Free* and ' From Left to Right*
as efforts'to capture the minds of American youth!
The book ' From Left To Right* is used as supple-mentory
reading in the twelfth grade.
The film pointed up the omission of various
aspects of American history in certain textbooks
in an attempt by Communists to get control of our
schools.
Earlier, Gorton had referred to the rumored
teacher picketing of the film showing as a ridiculous
request with which the teachers refused to
comply.
The school Board during the business portion of
the meeting passed a resolution to defer indefinitely
the statf, mandated Health Curriculum which was
to become effective September 1, 1970, until such
time the State would part of the estimated $ 50,000
cost. A second resolution also was passed that no
mandated programs be acceptable unless the state
shares in the cost.
Trustee A. Terry Weathers told those present
that we are faced with the most serious school
financing crisis in our history. Unless the State
aid picture changes. Weathers stated the taxpayers
stand to pay an increase of $ 150 on the school tax
bill.
81 teachers and staff personnel were approved
for tenure and 15 faculties members granted
