SCHOOL TAX MAY RISE $ 2.50 The District 22 School Board at Monday's meeting announced a
possible $ 2.50 rise in the tax rate can be anticipated at the present
time if Governor Rockefeller's 5 percent State aid cut is not rescinded.
The hike would mean about $ 150 for a house assessed at $ 6500.
Finance Committee Chairman A. Terry Weathers said that increases
in the budget would up the tax rate $ 1.57 and an additional
estimated 93 cents can be expected if the Governor means what he
says.
Weathers called the situation the ' most serious financial crisis in
school history.' He said that anyone who claims the budget can be cut
will have an opportunity to be heard at the budget hearing on Monday,
March 31 at 8: 30 p. m. at the Howitt Junior High School auditorium.
Aggies Schedule 60
Spring Sports Events
Howitt Junior High wrestlers who completed the season with an 8- 1 record are: bottom row left
to right: F. D'Anna, J. Celentano, D. Coogan, J. Misa, D. Weeks, R. Spena, A. Hewitt. Back Row:
Coach J. Geller, T. Volpe, F. Dellasperanza, A. Ancona, M, Urso, R. Ricciardi and M. DeGiglio.
The Long Island Aggies Spring
sports teams will engage in a
total of 60 contests, not including
regional tournaments, according
to the schedules announced this
wppk by Athletic Director Tom
Watt. Coach Bruce Robbins'
baseball squad, launching its
slate on March 28th, will play 16
foes, three of them away from
Farmingdale.
The lacrosse forces, guided by
Coach Fred Acee, have the
second heaviest Aggies' program
with fourteen engagements, eight
of them away. Like the diamond
squad, the stick- wielders will
launch their campaign on March
28th.
The track team,- with veteran
Coach Tom Watt and his new
assistant, Harry Schwarze, at the
helm, has ten meets, four of them
triangular; Coach Manny
Rolnick's tennis squad eleven
matches, two of them on rival
courts, and Coach George
Matola's golfers nine opponents,
all but two on the home links of
Beth page.
The track outfit will inaugurate
its campaign on April 5th, facing
Cobleskill at Farmingdale, then
will wind up the regular season
on May 7th against New York
Tech, also at home. Three days
later, the Aggies will serve as
hosts for the Region XV championships,
May 10th, at noon.
Both the tennis and golf teams
have April 4th as their opening
dates, with the netmen and
linksmen each playing host that
day to Orange Community
College representatives.
In each of the Spring schedules,
the Green and White will be
facing their perennial foes,
Nassau and Suffolk Community
Colleges in Paumonok Trophy
clashes. The baseball team,
which finished with a much
improved slate of nine triumphs
and seven reverses last season,
will highlight its campaign in
games with the Hofstra freshmen
at Hofstra, April 10th, and
against C. W. Post Jayvees, April
29th, at home.
The lacrosse team faces a real
tough program, seven of the op-
' ponents being college units. The
Princeton Jayvees will be visited
on April 12th, the Adelphi
yearlings on April 19th, and
Rutgers Freshmen, May 3. Home
encounters with the Army junior
varsity, April 26, and Hofstra
frosh, May 14th, should draw big
crowds. Coach Acee's charges
finished their second year of
competition last season with a
mark of 8- 5- 1.
The track and field team has
triangular meets carded with
Queensborough and Brooklyn
Poly, April 9; Dowling College
and Adelphi freshmen, April
15th; New York and Manhattan
C. C, April 30th, all at home, and
Staten Island and Catonsville C.
C. away on April 12th. The Aggies
also will participate in the Penn
Relays. They hope to return to
championship heights in the
Region XV title meet at Farmingdale,
May 10th. Last year
marked the first time in Coach
Watt's 21 years that the Green
and White failed to finish " in the
money" in the Regional meet.
The Aggies previously captured
13 titles, six runner- up posts and
one third.
The golfers, who retained their
Long Island Junior College crown
a year ago, face Nassau, April
15th, at their links, and Suffolk,
May 2, at home in Paumonok
engagements. New Coach George
Matola will go all out to have his
team match their imposing
record of 7 and 2 of a year ago. In
tennis, the only team not to go
over the 500 mark a year ago ( 4
triumphs and 5 reverses),
matches with Dowling, April 29,
Suffolk, May 2, and Nassau, May
6, all at home, are features of the
schedule.
