Village Acts On Parking ;
Allow Taxi Fare Increase
The Farmingdale Board of
Trustees held public hearings
last Monday to amend Ordinances.
The new parking field at the
northwest corner of Main and
North Front Streets was
designated as Municipal Parking
Field No. 6, and will be used for
Main Street merchants and their
employees on a permit basis.
Also enacted was the exclusive
use of the parking area to the
rear of the Village Hall and Fire
Department Headquarters for
Fire Department members.
Village employees and officials of
the Incorporated Village of
Farmingdale.
Heard also at the public
hearing was the motion of the
Board of Trustees to regulate the
hours of parking on Columbia
Street. Parking restrictions will
be observed from 8: 00 to 11: 00
a. m. on Mondays, so that
adequate provision for weekly
sweeping of the street could be
maintained. In order to further
study and analyze the comments
of the residents of this street
regarding such time limitation or
whether alternate side of the
street parking would be more
advantageous, no action was
taken on the matter until the
return of the Superintendent of
Public Works, who is away on
vacation.
Another public hearing was
held on the amendment of
General Ordinance No. 39,
regarding " Fences". The
amendment now permits the
construction of stockade fences
along the rear property line of
plots with the exception of corner
lots, not to exceed six feet in
height. To permit six foot
stockade fencing along rear lines,
it will be necessary for residents
( o apply for permits for all fence
applications at the office of the
Village Clerk.
The Board of Trustees also
approved the application of local
taxicab companies to increase
the fares for transportation
within the limits of trie Village of
Farmingdale from fifty cents per
person to seventy- five cents, with
additional passengers to the
same destination, charged fifty-cents.
This is the first taxi fare
increase since 1954, and due to
increased costs of equipment,
insurance and maintenance, and
to insure to local residents such
transportation convenience, the
fare increase was approved,
effective September 1st, 1969.
The Village Clerk reported to
the Board of Trustees that street
lights on Sherman Road had not
been in operation since June 28th,
and many calls from his office to
the Long Island Lighting Company
plus calls made direct by
residents of this street failed to
bring any response regarding
corrective action or reports from
Lilco to the Village Clerk
regarding the problem. The Clerk
was authorized to write to Lilco
demanding an official report as
well as information as to when
such lights would again be
operative.
After viewing an a r t i s t ' s rendering
of the proposed office
building construction at 181 and
189 Fulton Street, in the new
Business " G" District, and
having heard at public hearing
the application of the Long Island
Real Estate Board Holding Corp.
on May 19th, 1969, for a change of
zoning from a Residence " A"
District to such business use, the
Board of Trustees approved the
application heard at public
hearing.
