VOTERS DEFEAT BUDGETS;
LAVANMOLLINEAUX WIN
Youth Council Budget OK'd; Jacovsky Wins Library Seat
A total of 6,317 voters turned out in District 22 on Wednesday to
defeat the school budget ( 2,611 ' yes' to 3,476 ' no' votes) and the public
library budget ( 2,520 ' yes' vote to 3,533 ' no' votes) while the Far-^
mingdale Youth Council budget passed with 3,431 ' yes' votes to 2,623*
' no' votes.
The proposition of retaining the current transportation policy for
grades 7 to 12 at a cost of $ 77,340 was defeated with 2,742 ' yes' votes to
3,298 ' no' votes.
In a three- way School Board race, incumbent Trustee Thomas J.
Lavan with 2,822 votes was reelected over candidate John Luleks
2,082 votes and candidate Carl E. Gorton's tally of 1,038.
Another incumbent Trustee Leroy D. Mollieneaux Sr. was also
reelected with a vote of 3,282 to Jerry Wolk's total of 2,633.
In a five- way library trustee contest for one five year seat, Irwin
Jacovsky was victorious with 2,693 vote while Leonard F. Kafka
received 2,304; Robert J. Krapp, 241; Harold A. Levin, 149 and
William D. Sadler, 596 votes.
Mrs. Lucile Goulding, School Board President said that she expected
the Board to set the date of June 28th for the resubmission of
the school budget to the voters.
Lavan commented " I'm honored to have been re- elected to a second
term. I think the vote has proved what an excellent community this is
by not allowing itself to be scared by false rumors and false accusations".
Victorious library trustee, Irwin Jacovsky said he was happy to see
the repudiation of extremism in our community. He was disappointed
that the library budget didn't pass, but was looking forward to a
favorable vote on June 28."

The library board decided to resubmit the vote on June 28, since the
Board of Education had already set this date for the vote on the
purchase of the South Farmingdale branch building. The tax appropriation
will be reduced by $ 10,000. Library trustees Carl Gorton
and Warren Altmann were against resubmission of the budget.
The Board voted unanimously to retain the current staff and not to
set any reduction of hours until after the next vote. Meanwhile, the
staff would be paid from the fines and fees accounts.

president of the Farmingdale
Kiwanette chapter.
The Weldon E. Howitt Boy's
Leader Club Scholarship was
awarded to Nicholas LaMorte,
Robert McAlpine and Paul
Solenick.
Peter Bossis, Denise Eppler,
Patricia Gregorovic, Michael
Oggeri, and Lorraine Wilson
received the Farmingdale
Community Scholarships for
service to the community
Dennis Keenan was the
recipient of the Gerals McCaffrey
Memorial Scholarship.
Nancy Schmitt was awarded
the Yvonne Bourgeois
Scholarship, while the Dr. Martin
Luther King Scholarship was
awarded to Leopold Green and
Robert Watts by the Senior High
School Honor Society.
The Creative Artists
Scholarships were awarded to
Jeanne Swan and Denise
Laughton. Carol Kellerman was
presented with the Knights of
Pythias Award, while Judith Ann
Keiser was the recipient of the
award presented by the Kiwanis
Club.
Susan Manzione was cited by
the Sons of Italy and given an
award for having the highest
proficiency in the Italian
ianguage.
Michael Cifaldi and Linda
Citrano were awarded the
Republic Scholarships.
