Observer photographer
Jackson Pokress and a resident
of 505 Atlanta Avenue,
North Massapequa, attended
the Inauguration of President
of the United States Richard
M. Nixon on Monday in
Washington, D. C, with full
press credentials having
been received from the U. S.
Senate Gallery. He and his
wife, Wilma, Plainedge High
School Science Teacher, arrived
at the nation's Capitol
on Saturday along with what
seemed like half of the
United States. They had a
room at the Statler Hilton
two doors down from Mayor
John Lindsay of New York
City. Wilma had not packed
a suitcase and had only intended
to stay the day, but
found that her burnt orange
knit dress under winter rain
gear was the mode of even the
fanciest ladies there, and
was persuaded to stay
through Sunday The family
also was particularly interested
in seeing their son,
First Cadet Robert Pokress
of the U. S. Coast Guard
Academy, who was marching
in the Inaugural Parade
along with the rest of this
year's graduating class. ( See
picture.) They also vainly
looked for Massapequa's
Angelo D. Roncallo, Nassau
County Comptroller and TOB
GOP Leader, but could not
find him.
Press releases were issued
almost hourly by Jack
Horner, press secretary of the
Office of the President- elect.
Showing the hoopla and the
earthy character of the inauguration,
a typical press
release included such news
announcements as " Mrs.
Fina Sanchez ( Nixon's cook)
brought off the plane that
arrived at Andrews Air Force
Base at 4: 42 on Sunday —
the Nixon's two dogs — Pasha,
a yorkshire terrier, and
Vicky, a poodle. They were
met by Yuki, President Johnson's
mongrel. Traphes Bryant,
White House electrician,
and caretaker of Johnson's
dog, introduced Yuki to
Pasha and Vicky and then
took charge of all three dogs
to take them back to the
White House. Bryant asked
Mrs. Sanchez about the food
Pusha and Vicky were accustomed
to. The Presidentelect
and Mrs. Nixon headed
