MTA ACQUIRES REPUBLIC The Metropolitan Transportation Authority acquired Republic
Airport as the first step in its development of a major transportation
center and airport facility in Farmingdale.
William J. Ronan, Chairman of the MTA, said that the acquisition
" marks one of the most important steps in transportation for Long
Island. When completed, the transportation center will combine
facilities for high- speed Long Island Rail Road service; bus and taxi
depots; large scale commuter parking; and a general aviation air­port.
" These improvements will ultimately make it possible to provide
direct rail service between Republic and Penn Station in ap­proximately
one- half hour."
The airport property land and facilities, was appropriated today on
MTA's behalf by the New York State Department of Transportation,
which filed a map of the 296.22 acre airport with the Secretary of
State's office and with the Suffolk County Clerk's office in Riverhead.
In addition, the airport also includes 94 acres owned by the Federal
government at the southeastern part of the field. MTA has petitioned
the Federal government lor a iormal transfer of title of this property.
The airport, will continue as a general aviation facility, handling
private, corporate and business air traffic. There will be no scheduled
airline service.
" This action ensures that Nassau County and Western Suffolk
County will have a first- class, modern, all- weather general aviation
airport to bolster the economic growth of this rapidly growing sector
of the region.
" It also means we can develop an attractive air facility which will
help reduce the serious air congestion at LaGuardia and JFK airports
caused by small private and corporate planes," Chairman Ronan
said.
Farmingdale Teachers Begin Picketing
School District 22 teachers, whose confrant expired ^ n March 31,
began picketing five of the schools on Tuesday and Wednesday of this
week. There was no loss ol teaching or class time.
Classroom Teachers Association President Kenneth Deedy called
tor the picketing ' because the Board has not responded to any item
which involved money whatsoever'.
Deedy said that the School Board this week had abolished the
elementary guidance program without evaluation or negotiation. He
said that liaison has been non- existent in this situation.
The CTA and School Board reached an impasse negotiations
several weeks ago. Brother Cornelius Justin of Manhattan College
has been acting as mediator and has met with the teachers and the
Board on two occasions.
Despite the impasse, Deedy stated that the School Board ' has
always recognized the responsibility, to negotiate directly with the
teachers'.
He noted that the Board of the
MTA viewed this first acquisition
as an important conservation
i > ovc insofar as general aviation
is concerned. The Board also
approved pians to take additional
properties adjacent to the
present airport so that the
transportation complex could be
developed.
The additional properties
planned for taking by the Board
of MTA are non- residential and
are largely vacant. These
properties, totaling 115 acres,
include a 14- acre tract of land
north of Conklin Street adjacent
to the LIRR Republican Station;
a 73- acre vacant parcel im­mediately
adjacent to the airport
on the southwest, and several
smaller parcels, totaling 28
acres, abutting Route 109 south of
the airport which will be acquired
to provide a safety buffer zone.
The MTA will also require
easements for properties south of
the airport to limit the height of
structures and to provide for
necessary approach lighting. The
current plan also rails for ' he
phasing out of nearby Zahns
Airfield in the near future.
The area known as Breslau
Gardens is not involved in this
airport taking, although in the
fullest, ultimate development ol
the transportation center it may
be desirable.
" The Authority has been
reluctant to recommend im
mediate acquisition of this
property: first because it will not
be necessary to use this land for
development purposes for some
years, and second because il
involves dislocation of a number
of families and we would like to
study the matter much more
carefully with local officials
before any definite action is
taken," the MTA Chairman said.
