Safety Car Of Future
Being Designed Here
A safety car that could cut fatalities and injuries of conventional
automobiles in half was designed by the Republic
Aviation Division of the Fairchild Hiller Corporation in Farmingdale
it was announced this week. The Republic study
was authorized by the New York State Legislature in 1965
under legislation sponsored by Senator Edward J. Speno. commissioner
of Motor Vehicles William S. Hults awarded the
$ 100,000 contract to Republic. A second report concerning the
cost facts and mass production methods will be ready by July

The report describes 134 safety features which should prevent
injuries. Among them are: ' swinging gate* front bumper

that if the car were hit, it would fall downward rather than
into the front seats; a collapsible steering wheel; foot

of plastic foam to prevent fires; a periscope rear view mirror
to see beyond blind spots.
Senator Speno will appear in Washington this week to seek
federal financial participation in the safety car.
