COUNTY AGREES
TO PURCHASE AIRPORT
The Suffolk County Board of Supervisors, in a surprise move
this week, voted by an 8- 2 margin, to purchase the Republic
Airfield in East Farmingdale and operate it as a general aviation
airport.
Suffolk County Executive Lee Dennison said that he would open
negotiations immediately to purchase the 265 acre airfield, " I'm
not one to fiddle around with a thing like this", he said. " The
Long Island region will benefit.
" I'm delighted," was the reaction of Farmingdale resident
Sebastian A. Albrecht, who has been fighting for a general airport.
* Although we would have preferred the Town of Babylon
to have purchased the airfield, the next most local authority is
the County of Suffolk. The County will provide a larger tax
base and it may turn out to be better. The airport should mean
great things for the Farmingdale area with the attraction of a
better type of industry. Fairchild Hiller will now probably
decide to stay in Farmingdale and to expand production here.
Also there will probably be many more blue- chip office buildings
attracted to the Farmingdale area from New York City. Any
temporary loss of tax revenue, will be more than made up in
the future with increased assessed valuation," Albrecht said.
The Federal Aviation Agency will pay up to 50 per cent of
the purchase price of the field which has been valued at between
$ 6,000,000 and $ 8,000,000.
The Suffolk action was spearheaded by the fact that the
Metropolitan Commuter Transportation Authority were moving
to acquire the airfield which would take it out of local control.
In so doing, the Authority could condemn land for acquisition
purposes.
Hynes Seeks Appraisal of Motor Ave. Site for Recreation
Councilman Frank J. Hynes
this week, submitted a resolution
to the Town Board calling forthe
appointment of an appraiser to
determine the current cost of a
16- acre parcel located on
Heisser Lane and Motor Avenue,
Farmingdale, for future development
as a community park. In
submitting the resolution, Hynes
suggested that the Town Attorney
confer with the State to determine
if there is additional State land
in the area available for Town
acquisition. He said, " this land,
if available, could be acquired
by gift or negotiated contract.
" I believe," Councilman Hynes
said, " we should ascertain what
State land is available, if any,
while at the same time proceeding
with the real estate appraisal
of the 16- acre tract on
Heisser Lane and Motor
Avenue."
The Town Board deferred
action on the Councilman's resolution
pending information from
Town Attorney Bernard F. McCaffrey
who will contact the State
to determine if they own any
land in the area and are willing
to convey it to the Town. The
Board is expected to take up
Hynes' resolution, calling forthe
appointment of an appraiser of
the Heisser Lane and Motor
Avenue site, at its June 28th
meeting.
