SET HEARING ON TAX
RELIEF FOR ELDERLY
The Farmingdale Board of Education at a Special Meeting
held on Monday at the Weldon E. Howitt Junior High School, set
the date for a public hearing for Monday, September 12 on a
recent ruling that would enable persons over 65 years of age to
take advantage of a 50% reduction in school taxes. ( See School
Board notes on page 7).
School Board member A. Terry Weathers, who made the
motion to pursue the tax relief matter said that he hoped that
the plan would go into effect as soon as possible and in any event
no later than the 1967- 68 school year.
The senior citizen tax exemption ruling would enable persons
over 65 years of age with a per annum income of less than
$ 3,000 a year to be eligible for the proposed tax relief.
During the meeting, there was some question from board
members about their part in bringing this tax relief into reality.
C. Kendrick Smith, school board attorney, then told the Board
that only a ' municipal body* may act on the proposal and that a
ruling has been handed down that a school district is considered
a municipal body.
In other matters before the board, a letter was read from
Suffolk County Executive H. Lee Dennison in • response to

Charting a course for reelection in November is Assemblyman
Martin Ginsberg, center, of the 8th Assembly District and
Mac Singer ( 1) and Jules Bender ( r), co- chairman of Ginsberg's
committee for re- election. The trio are checking a reapportionment
map to determine recently established Assembly District,
boundary lines. Ginsberg is seeking his second term in Albany
on the GOP ticket and Stated that, in his campaign he will
emphasize mandating doctor's prescriptions for adults over
the age of 21 who seek cough medicines containing narcotics
as well as bills for aid to education, including one for the
Plainedge school district.
