Carman, Hallahan Up For
Thursday, March 10, 1966
VILLAGE VOTERS
GO TO POLLS TUESDAY Incumbent Village Trustees of The Incorporated Village of
Farmingdale Willis B. Carman Jr. and John T. Hallahan are
running for reelection this Tuesday, March 15 in the first village
election that calls for four year terms. Up until now both
the trustee posts and the mayoralty seat were for two year
terms. By resolution passed on June 7, 1965, subject to a
permissive referendum, which never came about, four year
terms and biannual elections were established. In order to bring
about the biannual election, the two trustee and the mayor's
posts next year will be for five > ear term and thereafter as
four year terms.
Out of a total number of 3623 registered voters, only a small
percentage are expected to vote mostly because of a no contest
election. Last year less than 200 cast their ballot.
Both candidates are Liberty Party members and have served
two terms of two years each.
Trustee John T. Hallahan is Assistant Director of Public
Relations of the Bristol- Myers Company. He received his
A. B. degree from Union College in 1946 and his M. A. degree
from Syracuse University. He did graduate work at Syracuse
University- Maxwell School of Citizenship.
Hallahan served in the United States Army Intelligence
Corps during World War II. In 1947, he was appointed a Public
Administration Intern with the New York State Civil Service
Commission. In 1948, he served as an Assistant Professor
at the State University of New York and was later named
Associate Professor. In 1955, he was on a seven month
sabbatical leave from the University to act as Administrative
Assistant to a United States Senator and in 1959, he was
a Congressional Assistant in the House of Representatives.
Willis B. Carman Jr. a life long resident of Farmingdale, was
educated in the Farmingdale School Systems, and graduated
from Hamilton College, and Fordham University School of Law.
He is a member of the law firm of Carman, Callahan and Carman
of Farmingdale.
He was first elected to the Village Board in 1962, after serving
on the Village Planning Board. He is past president of the
Farmingdale Community Chest and district chairman for
Cerebral Palsy fund raising efforts.
A former assistant District Attorney of Nassau County, he
is Secretary of the Savings and Loan Law Committee of the
American Bar Association, former president of the Protestant
Lawyers Association of Nassau County, and a member of the New
York State and Nassau County Bar Associations.
Carman is a member of the Farmingdale Rotary Club and
Farmingdale Fire Department. He served with the United
States Army in Korea during the Korean War.
The election will be held on Tuesday, March 15 from 12
noon until 9 p. m. at Village Hall, 361 Main Street, Farming-dale.
Town Board Hears
Complaints About Roads
A group of eight West Farmingdale
residents attended die
Town of Oyster Bay weekly meeting
on Tuesday to protest the
condition of roads on West Walnut,
West Oak, West Chesnut,
Spencer and Beech streets in
West Farmingdale.
The group turned over a petition
to the Town Hoard containing
138 names and a letter from
the West Farmingdale Civic Association.
Pictures pointing up
the condition of the streets were
also presented.
Robert Miller, a spokesman for
the group stated mat the Town
Board told the group that they
would look into the matter.
According to a Town of Oyster
Bay spokesman, there was no
money available to complete the
project which was begun last
year. As soon as funds are made
available, the project would be
completed.

where the public, as well as physical education administrators and swimming
coaches participated in a seminar explaining how this program can be set up
l o c a l l y.
Jesse Carte, 02, former Commanding
Officer of the Eighth
Precinct of the Nassau County
Police which has jurisdiction)
over Farmingdale, passed on this
Monday at the age of 62 in
Florida following his retirement
in February.
He served for 27 years in the
Nassau County Police Department.
When he retired he was a s sistant
chief inspector and deputy
to chief of district*
Carte joined the force in 1939
and was promoted to detective in
1947; sergeant in 1950; lieutenant
in 1953, and captain in 1956.
Prior to becoming commander
of the 8th precinct in I960, he
served as deputy commander of
tiie first and third precincts.
Before joining the police force
he was a Marine lieutenant serving
in Haiti and Nicarauga.
He leaves his widow, Johanna.
