VOTERS OK EXPANSION School District 22 voters approved a $ 4,500,000 high school
expansion program last Saturday by a vote of 2,752 to 2331,
Passage of the referendum will enable the Board of Education
to complete plans for adding21 classrooms, seven science rooms,
one art room, five business education rooms, one home economics
room, four music rooms, one gymnasium and two station swimming
pool as well as expanding the existing facilities of the
cafeteria, kitchen, library, health office, guidance and administrative
offices, faculty room and student resource areas.
The two- story addition will increase the high school capacity to
3,500. Present enrollment is 2559 and is expected to reach 3,000
by 1969- 70 and 3,500 by 1975. School officials expect the work
to be completed by September 1969.
The State is expected to pay for half of the construction
cost from building aid programs, although voters had to approve
the total cost.
Percentagewise, Saturday's vote represented a 54.1 majority
in favor of the referendum. While this seemed like a close vote,
a school spokesman pointed out that in a Presidential election
a 54.1% vote would constitute a landslide.
It was also noted that 78.8 of the 6,568 registered voters
cast their ballots, which was a tribute to the hard work of the PTA
who formed a telephone brigade to get out the vote.
Working drawings will be prepared by the architectural firm
of Knappe and Johnson following detailed conferences with the
administration and Board of Education. Following this phase,
contractors bids will be solicited and then awarded.
On Saturday night, following the announcement of the returns,
St. Kilian Boy Choir
Concert Series Set
Mrs. Lucile Goulding, District 22 Board of Education President
told the Observer that she wished to convey her appreciation
to the taxpayers for their vote of confidence and her special
thanks to those who helped bring out the favorable vote.
Trustee A. Terry Weathers said, " It's a tribute to the voters
intelligence in District 22 for not being panicked by last week's
news of tax increases of county government,"
Trustee Vincent Simone who was chairman of the High School
Expansion Committee, expressed his gratitude at Monday's
Board meeting with particular emphasis on the fine work done
by Superintendent of Schools, Dr. William Kinzler ( See What
Happened at the School Board Meeting).
In reviewing historically building referendums in District 22
it was noted that the votes on all propositions within the last
ten years were fairly * close' votes. In March 1964 the W. G.
Howitt J. H. S. annex vote passed by only 197 votes with 3306
' Yes* to 3109 ' no' votes. The Albany Avenue school additions
by 3232 to 3118; Parkway Oaks additions by 3221 to 3119 and
Woodward Parkway additions by 3238 to 3104. Many of the propositions
had to be put up to the voters more than once in order to
secure passage, a school official noted.
The Farmingdale Senior High School vote on May 18, 1957, had
been rejected by 2350 ' no' votes cast to 1775 affirmative votes.
It was rejected for the second time on June 26, 1957 by 1941 ' no'
votes to 1363 ' yes' votes. It was turned down again on July 2,
1958 with 1818 votes against to 1721 yes votes. It was finally
passed on November 15,1958 with 3635 affirmative votes to 1787
negative votes. The cost of the original building was.$ 5,475,000.

Since there was no garbage
pickup on Thanksgiving Day, the
Thursday normal collection
within the Incorporated Village
of Farmingdale will be made on
Friday.
In connection with the garbage
and refuse collection contract,
it has been brought to the attention
of Mayor Joseph Zureck and
the Board of Trustees that many
taxpayers and residents of the
village are unaware of the service
being rendered by the Village
contractor, Monbro Sanitation
Service, Inc., in theremoval
of items considered as rubbish,
such as old refrigerators, washing
machines, paint cans, old
mattresses, etc.
"~ Mayor Zureck and the Board
of Trustees advised that anyone
wishing to dispose of such items
call Monbro Service and tell them
of the items and quantity. The
caller will then receive instructions
from Monbro Sanitation
Service as to when to place such
items out for collection. This
procedure is necessary so that
schedules of this extra collection
can be made without interfering
with normal garbage pickups.
The telephone number for
Monbro Sanitation Service, Inc.,
is SU 5- 8141.
