3,800 Youngsters Participating
YOUTH SUMMER PROGRAM
IN HIGH GEAR 3,800 youngsters in District # 22 have reached
the halfway mark in the Farmingdale Youth Council
summer program.
The six- week long program which began in 1950,
has offered local youngsters supervised recreation
including free swimming instruction, tennis, athletics,
arts and crafts, and trips to points of interest
in the greater New York area.
The program which takes in youngsters from first
grade through high school offers a wide range
of activities at each of the school playgrounds
as well as Pinehurst and Florgate town parklets.
The Woodward Parkway youngsters meet however,
at the High school grounds since the construction
of the new wing necessitated the change. A total of
700 youngsters are engaged in taking free swimming
instruction at the small pool at Weldon E.
Howitt.
On Fridays, each playground has a special event
activity, such as penny carnivals, bicycle dress
up contests, etc.
Each Playground and Recreation Center operated
by the Youth Council plans a trip and some
special event each week. This week some children
from Woodward Parkway went to the Bronx Zoo
and to Tobay Beach. Northside and Mill Lane
youngsters enjoyed the facilities of a bowling
alley. Albany Avenue is stressing baseball games
this week coupled with a visit to Malibu Beach.
Twenty- five members of the Senior High School
group went to Tobay Beach last
week. Their plans now include a
regular trip on Thursdays. All
children of Junior and Senior
High School are invited. A committee
of this group is issuing
a special invitation to all young
people of this age to join with
them to plan trips to one or more
of the music or drama festivals
in this area.
The special event this week was
a trip to the Syosset Theater to
see a showing of the Julie
Andrews film, " Sound of Music".
