If you've been wondering where all the sports cars
came from last Sunday afternoon in Farmingdale, the
answer is that Farmingdale's Frank Vasos* newly
formed SAAB Club of Long Island hosted about eighty
cars that were participating in a safari that began
earlier in the day in Mineola.
for answers to such q icstions as
who lives at 32 Hickory Hill?
( the mail box had to be read along
the way) When was the first purchase
for the Town of Huntington?
When does a certain Rotary Club
meet? ( which had to be observed
enroute) and ending with an estimate
of the height of the smoke
stack of the City of Glass.
The value of the five poker cards
and the totaling of the questions
isked during the trip resulted in
the conclusion of the safari which
ended with refreshments at the
nearby Casa Lou Restaurant.
Other events, such as ice races
at the Pocono Pines, Pa., are
planned for next month.
It looks like the old- fashioned
touring clubs are back and you
can credit a Farmingdaler for its
creation. ' It's lots of fun," according
to its founder.
Recently Vasos, who holds an
auto franchise on Route 109,
formed an unusual touring club
which in many ways is a flashback
to the early days of the automobile.
The touring club was formed to
participate primarily in sports
events such as rallies, gymkhanas,
and other activities to stimulate
group touring.
Last Sunday's safari as Vasos
calls it, included a specially
charted course which Involved a
variety of checkpoints which called
for each car to stop and pick up
a playing card at various points.
Since time was not a factor in the
event, participants were disqualified
if they violated any traffic
laws. The route chosen included
sections of the North Shore which
were considered picturesque and
the event also included the search
