Mrs. Bannon Receives
Certification From
Federal Commission
Appointment by Senate
Is Expected ta Follow
As Matter of Routine
Mrs. Mary Ellen Bannon^"Acting
Postmaster since July 1, 1850, when
she succeeded Edward A. Rice, has
received a certification from the
Federal Civil Service Commission
stating ^that she was the only ap-plicant
who passed the examination
for Postmaster conducted by the
Commission in September, 1951.
Mrs. Bannon's appointment as
Postmaster now awaits only approv-al
by the Senate and the President's
* signature, which are regarded as a
matter of routine now that she has
successfully qualified for permanent
appointment to the office.
A resident of 102 Denhoff avenue,
Freeport, for the last 32 years, Mrs.
Bannon was a iDemocratic commit-teeman
of her district for 26 years.
She was Executive Commifcteeman
f«r iFreeport, or Democratic leader,
, for 10 -years and a member of the
^Btate Democratic Committee for
-; eight years. She was also president
Jof the-Nassau County Federation"ot
-Democratic Women's Club for 10
yeare and president of -the F*ree-
. port Democratic Club for three
years.
Mrs. Bannon served as Assistant
Supervisor of the 1940 Federal Cen-sus
and was supervisor of a WJPJV.

Mrs. Bannon says there has been
a rapid Increase in receipts at the
Ftoeepprt Post Office since she be-came
Acting iPostmaster,- reflecting
tfoe population growth and industri-alization
of the village. Mrs. Bannon,
Assistant Postmaster, William Dun-can
and Superintendent of Malls
Joseph Gofus all received salary in-creases
last year based on the larger
volume of receipts at the postoffice
and anticipate another Increase next
year as present indications are that
receipts this year will exceed $400,-
000 for the first time.
Miss Freeport of 1952 Crowned
Ohari O'Brien, selected as "Miss Freeport of 1952" in a contest conducted
at Century's Freeport Theatre, was crowned by Pat Gardner. The coro-nation

Holy Redeemer School
Re-Opens September 8
Our -Holy Redeemer School will
re-open for the new year on Monday
morning, September 8, after the
pupils attend the 8:30 o'clock mass,
Monday and Tuesday were registra-tion
days for new pupils, and Sister
Miriam Frances, the principal, said
the enrollment reached the figures
expected and that the classes would
be overcrowded until the eight-room
addition, for which funds have
been raised is ready for occupancy.
Efforts are to be made to start
construction as quickly as possible.
Appeals were made at masses last
Sunday for those who have made
pledges to bring their payments up
to date.
Maynard Smiths Home
From Montreal Vacation
Mr?~arid Mrs. Maynard Smith and
.their three " children, who live on
'Branch avenue, have just returned
from a two weeks" vacation which
they spent at the Windsor Hotel in
Montreal, Can. The Smiths made

Qrant Store Wins Variance \
For Sunrise Highway Front
fh$ Zoning Board of Appeals, following a hearing last
week, granted the application- of the W. T. Grant Co., for a
variance to permit the erection of a building fronting ,on Sun-rise
Highway; east of South Main street, without the 5-foot
setback, required under the Municipal Zoning Ordinance.
This means that the structure will
have.the,same building line attthe
Jacob Post building at South (Main
street, and Sunrise Highway which
it is to adjoin. It also means that
construction will get under way
shortly. The Grant store is to have
entrances on Main street, Sunrise
Highway and Newton Boulevaiti.

be razed to make way for the new

annual outing of the Unity Party of
Freeport at the West Beach, Hemp-ecad
Town Beach, Point Lookout-tut
Saturday. Chairman Cord Vlebrock
and his associates on the committee
in charge proclaimed it the most
successful event in the history of the
party.
Chairman Vlebrock welcomed the
picnickers with- a few remarks over
the public address system, and then
activlties( for the day got underway.
Pood, prepared under the direction
of Edward Staros and supervised by
Peter Kimbis, was served with aban-don
to supplement the luncheons
supplied by the picnickers them-selves.
Hot dog's and coffee were
handed out with an assortment of
pastries, sandwiches, hundreds of
cups of ice cream, ice cold sodas "for
the youngsters and other beverages
for adults. _ • •- .
A program of games and other
events was conducted by a commit-tee
headed by Warren F. Millard.
