never believed in this policy as a beneficial one to the readers

We went into a careful study of all phases of this cam-paign.

As the Freeport election campaign goes into its final phases,
the Leader wishes to express its opinion as to its merits, and
to state its choice as to the candidates. We have observed the
campaign from the sidelines, as aloof .as it is possible to get in
an affair, so bloss to everyone'^ home* We have opened up our
columns equally to both sides to express their views. And now*
having considered everything carefully and without prejudice
we have come to the conclusion that the best interests of the
Village demand the re-election of Mayor Robert L. Doxsee and
his running mates on the Unity Party ticket. Trustees William
F. Glacken and Seward J. Baker. We also highly favor the re-election
of Judge Hilbert R. Johnson, the fourth Unity Party can-didate,
but as he is unopposed, the results in his case are a
foregone conclusion,
Some efforts have been made to detract from the splendid

"The Village Board ended the fis-cal
year on Feb. 28 with a budget-any
balance of $197/131.09 the an-nual
financial report lasued tab
week by Village Treasurer Stephen;
Hunt revealed. This la more than,
double Bhe 1949-60 balance which
totaled $93t254.68. :
Municipal officials explained that
this* was due to the fact that the
financial affbira of thq village were
kept well within the budgetary al-lowances
and that receipts from va-rious
agencies other than taxation
exceeded by wide margins the anti-cipated
revenues when the budget
for 1950-51 was set up by the viUhge
fathers last. April.
Here are some of the items which
helped-to create the record balance:
Stadium receipts — anticipated,
$35,000; received,' $54,487.16.
Parking meters — $40,000 and
$46,036,
Mortgage tax^-$16,300 and $33,-

work of Village management has marked the two-year
term of and his Board. This Board has brought
the Village to a comfortable Ahanoial position, carrying over
foi< two yeard budget balAnoea of $98,254.68 and $197,131.09.
Suoh consistent good management is not the .result of
aobideht, but of keen, clear business judgment. It is a remarka-ble
record in this year of crushing burdens of taxation imposed
by higher levels of government to meet the national emergency.
And now don't forget that the emergency has hit .Village man-agement
as well #s it has hit you Freeport householders^ "^
hold the line in such 'circumstances, and to maintain the
