HEN Maroia An¬ drews moveil to Chicago from the country village in which she had nl- ¦ways lived she uatnrally expect¬ ed to he a little lonely at first. Bnt she jnst as natnrnlly believed that the loneliness would not last long. She bad always got quickly acquainlod with the lew new "girls" wbo had moved into Bridgeport dur¬ ing her lifetime. She saw no reason why oity people sbonid take auy longer to perform a like ceremony. And she was more tban ready to meet them balf way.
But the boys and girls who went to the pnblio school and tbe Sanday- tchool wbiob Marcia attended in Chi¬ cago already knew lots of other boys and girls, and, especially as tht stranger entered into the class work rather lato in the term, tbey were quite fully occupied with their own iutarestt. So wben Marcia had been going to the Hammond school regu¬ larly every day for three months she wat still rel-y lonely.
"Tbey don't mean to be unkind, I can see that," sbe told ber motber, for Marcia was as just as obe waa sensi¬ tive, and intuitively realized the true reason of tbis apparent neglect npou tha part of ber classmates, "but they're oil so busy and so happy aud they know so many people tbat I dun't believe tbey ever think of itrangars at all. I feel aa if I was just tiok for tome other girl to talk to whenerer I'm not studying."

mother, which, while it ileepuiied her loneliness for a lime, brought matters ont all right iu the end.
Slaying Ulu at school ono evening, in oriier to glance orer a book iu the tohool library, sbe found, wben re¬ moving the dost from her fingers afterward, a beautiful ring lyiua ou the edge of tbe dressing-room basiu. She knew whose ring it was imme¬ diately. Sbe bad often watobed the diamond in its flashing from the fin¬ ger of Evelyn Oorlon, tha girl wbo sat next to her in school, flirl like, Mar¬ oia, who had never owned a ring, bad oftao envied Evelyn the possession of thit one. Now the amused herself for some moments by slipping it ou and off har ' own flnger and watchiuit the light play about tbe handsome stone. Then sbe went in search of the janitor and olTeretl Ihe-ring to him.
"No," said tbe janitor, who did not care for the trouble of retarniug the trinket nor to keep so valuable an ar¬ ticle over uight. "I don't want totake it. Oive it to the principal or keep it until to-morrow mornfng "
But the principal htd gone home tome time before, aud both the jani¬ tor and Marcia htd forgotten tbat, the day being Friday, there would be uo school session to-morrow. Mo Marcia, girlishly willing, if uot glad, to wear the lovely thing bome and to keep it overnight, was sorely troubled upon reacbing bome to remember that she mutt either retain it uutil Monday or find some means of getting it to its owner.
On Saturday night Marcia, iftei' baviug lire,l herself out by nuavailiug elTorts to find Evelyu. was compelled to return home wilh the ring still in htr posaettion. Next morning she awoke ti: find her mother very ill with a dipbtberitio sor« tbroal. Three weeks later, almost before tbe mother was able to sit np, Marcia herself came down witb tbe same disease, so it was nearly two mouths before the entere^l the Hamtuand acb,>.>l asain, and in atl tbat time sbe had hardly thought of tbe diamond ring at all. Whan abe had remembered il, during the intervals of her own and her mother's illness, sbe had intended to write a letter to Ibe principal of the school tnggesting that Evelyn come after tbe ring, but this sbe had neg¬ lected tc do, l)«ing overworked and weary, nntil sbe waa so nearly ready to retnrn to school that auch a courae •earned unnecessary. Finally she re- tolrcd that-Ihe simplest plan of all would be to retain Ibc ring until able lo return it personally
Evelyu (.rorton, meanwhile, had not missed the nug until some time after reachiss basse that aitersooa, asd had uot then remembered where she had lost it. Advertisements asking for Its return .-iid promising a reward lar ihis action war* inserted in all tbe aafert by lier father, bnl tbete, as Ifarota nevar t.iw tbem, wert of no •vail. At U>1 the (ava Dji tlia ring
for hopelessly lost, never thinking of having left it at sebool until eome weeks after missing .it
Then, one moruing as she stocl waiting for a comra,lo in the base¬ ment, the janitor casually remarked that be supposed she bad got ber ring all rigbt. Expiauations followed and E'etyo Bt oace jumped to the conclu¬ sion tbat Marcia had sloleu tbe ring. "I always knew there was some¬ thing queer nbout her, she was ko un¬ naturally iiniet null Ptill!" she ex¬ claimed, not remembering tbat no op¬ portunity Und been given quiet, retir¬ ing Marcia lo be anything else. ".She's just a thief, Ihai'.i all she is, anil she stayed away (mm school all this time just because sbe doesn'l dare come backl "
"Hush, hush, hush! Marcia has bns been ill," comuiandod tbo prin- cipol, wbeu Evelyn dashed into the otlice witb ber excited story. "Thai ij, she was ill ttvo weeks ago, wheu I sent to find cut the cnuse of her ab¬ sence. I know she is!" There was anotber r-asU to the office lo flud oul Marcia's address, but Miss Stroug re¬ fused lo give it.
"Let me bear no more of such words as 'thief and 'dishonest,'" she said, sternly. "I will look into the matter, Evelyn, us I told you. Iu Ibi- meantime, let nothiug more bo said." But a great deal more was aaid, despite the principal's coinninuil. lie fore school closed that nfteruoon lb.: report thot Maroia hud stolen the dia moud ring had spicad all througli the school. It was discussed by knots ,,1 excited boys and girls upon the play¬ ground that afternoon, and agaiu just ns eagerly the next morning. Whon school was piesi-iitly opened and il was supposed lliat nothing lui.l beeu beard about Iho ring a state nf ex¬ citement bnt poorly siippres.sed reigned everywhere. And iu the midst of nil this, juut as they were vainly tiyiug to dni.v tbeir attention from Evelyn's crimson cheeks an,1 flashing eyes to the lesson in ban,I, tbe door opened nud MarciU berself walked in. Distressed at being late and evidently a little nervous berself, she made ber way qnietly to her seat and opened ber books. Almost be¬ fore this bad happened, however, Evelyn was upon ber feet aud wildly signaling tbe teacher.
"Where is my ring?" she nsked Marcia, as the teacher merely looked at ber quietly aud gnve no pennissiun to speak. "Where is the ring that you stole from me','"
Marcia, looking at her iu opou and nndisguiaed astonishment, turned pale at the sound of the word "stole." "Do you mean lo say?" she iu¬ quired iu her turn, after a moment or two of borriHed silciico on the part ol nil concerned, "that you Ihiuk I .stole your ring?"
"Of course yon stole it," responded Evelyn, angrily, and loeiug all con¬ trol of herself iu ber paauiou. "Tell mo wbero it is or I'll have you ar¬ rested right away!" j
For answer Marcia, wbo bad arisen to ber feet wbeu coufroiited by Ele- ' lyn's accusation, sank slowly to ber j seat and lurned her nttenliou to her ' books. She was pallid wilh auger, i trembling with wroth aud indiguiitiuu, but sbe kept herself well iu bnud. '¦ Evelyn olso sat down; she wns ton | weak witb oxcitomeut to stand up longer. No further word was spoken until Miss Strong, whose coming at . tbat bcur was unusual, stepped quiet- i ly into tho room. At sight of tho ; flushed oud nervous faces turued toward bcr she sloppcl nud looked in¬ quiringly at tbo teacher, who briefly explained Ibe recent occurrence, nu,l Miss Strong's owu face took on an un¬ usually brilliaut color. She nmunled tbe plulforiu nud faced tho jiupilu j with au air of sleru indigualiou. |
"There has been a great, a terrible ' injustice doue here," she said, slowly, j "aud I am greatly ashamed that any i pupil of the Hammouil school should ' have beeu so unkind, as well as «o , wicked. Jliss Gorton's ring wus ro- j turned to uie by Jliss Andrews this moruiug; it would have been returned to Miss Oorlon long sgo, ns I have j nu'ple proof, if it bad been jiossilile for the unwillmg retainer uf the riu.i,' to find Miss (Jtrt-fun.
"Miss Andrews," addressing 'Mav- cia, with courteous kindness, ".Mi.<s Horton will, of course, apologize to you promptly for ber lujuslii-u and un ' kiuducns."
"It's just the way they've acted al! along," said Marcia, stiiiig lo liitler speech by the reniembi-once of her wi'jter'sloneliuess, culiiiiuatiug in tbi-* dreadful accusati,,ii. "I waiitcl t.i come to the city S.I badly, " slio went | ou, borely choking baek the tears which told in her voice if n,,t her cyi-.i, "and it's beeu perfectly awful. I've beeu the loneliest girl in school all wiuter, and now"—breokirgdowu cu- ' tirely—"they think 1,1—stimll"
"No, we di.n't, Marcia, we don't, indeed! " cried Evelyu, as ttariu-benrt- ed and quick lo repent as she wns im- - pulsirely ready to jump «t couelu- . siouB, "we don't, dearie. 1 never real- ! ly thought so myself. I was ouly so ¦ auxious to get my ring back, an,! it looke,l so queer tbat yoiiil kepi it, aud I got sii excited nu,l angry. I'li-ase forgive me," she whispered, thn, wing ber arms aruuu,! thu sobbing Marcia and kissing her warmly, "aud forget that I was ever so mean.*'
The storm bad all bloivn over a few minutes later, when Marcia ami Eve¬ lyn, who bad both been excuse,!, un¬ asked, by Miss Strong, fur the rest uf the day, went doan the stainvny to¬ gether. It was the Hrst lime which they had ever doue so, arm in arm, , nnd tbey have been fast frieuds ever since.—(.'hicago Keoonl.

These res..»rche», it Is clalme.l, cleatly prove that iha mys'erioiis Keely motor was a delusion and deception and Its alleged mysterious forci-s the result ol trickery.
The investigalors wero Prolessor Carl HerlDg. a cunsuliinK electrical engineer of experience; Arthur W. (loodapeed. Assist¬ ant Professor of Physics In tl-e Unlverslly of rennsyivania, whn visited the labora¬ tory yaars ago at the r.-quest of ,Mrs. Bioomlleid Moore; Llghtner WItmer, Pro¬ fessor of experimental Psychology In the rnlverslty of rennsylvonla, and Dr. M. O. Miller, who has had special iralning In roound-digging and who superlutended Ihe digging .'pcratlons aod plotted tlis re¬ sults.
Evory hit of flooring In the house al No. 1130 North Twenlleth sireet was ripped up lu tbe search for evidence. Many curloui discoveries were made. The colling of one room had boen lowernd about two Incliaa in order lu leave spa.'o for wires and tubes. This celling was made ol planks instead of piaster, nn.l there weru numerous augur holes and trap doors, Tbe augur holes In botb walls and floors In different parts of tho house showed that many tunes and wires ran from une room to anotber,
Iiut most Interesting of all was a high presaure tube which was liuilt Into tbe wnll. Although Incoinplate, the tallica- lions were that It conoeeteii the tbree-ton sphere buried In the basomenl with the lever inacbine by which Keely developed an uplifting expansive furce of 25,000 poun.ls per square Inch without un uplift¬ ing force nf oue ounea under the piston, Keely attribute,! tbls pbenomenou to bis "discovery" of vibrations, communicated through wires. And herein lies tho whole sigultlcanoe of the exposure. What ap¬ pearcl In Keely's laboratory to be mero wires were in reality leogtt, sof line tubing, thruugh which great power was transiull- tod from tbe hurled cylinder lu the form of compressed nlr or gas.
How highly eoinprossed was the air that Keely could store iu his big Irou sphere Is shown by the fact that measurements and simple ealculnllons give this roceptaciotho capability uf resisting a bnrsltng pressure of from 20,000 tu 100,000 pounds per square Inch,
Unaided us he probably was, Keely must have exercised prodigious Inganulty aud Industry lu order to build up the Ingenious scheme by which ho was destined to Imluee so mauy thousands frum the pockets of tbe credulous. Ho worked at uinny trades to which be bad uot boon appreulloo.l. Ila was a plumber, plasterer, earpenter, mason and many other things cnniblnod. One of the Important discoveries was a long Iron pipe, which ran from very nenr tbe shallow pil In tbe front room on tbe ground floor to witbin a short distance of the large sphere. It was plugged at ench end wltli curious rlgbt-angled Joints nf very rough workmanship, but thoroughly eRlcient for tbe control of great pressure.
It ought lo be possible fortliH.se who now bavo Keely's machines lo prove at nnce whether eonipressod air or gas waa tho source of their motion, and to do tbls at once without giving awuy any otber secrets of tboir meolftiWiim. If tbev'are so made that coinpnssed gases woul.l make them 11 will probably be sale tn conclude that tboir secret Is discovered and to relegate Ihem lo tbe scrap heap nr to put them In museums to illuatralo the success of another humbug. On the otber hand, II they could uot bo mnde to net hv snob u for.-e they will acquiren new Interest by Iho demoa- slrallou uf Ibat fact.
