From the time wheu he Tras •n impetuous youngster of fourteen ontll be stood beside Martha Custis, a proud brldrnrroom nt twenty-seven, the young Virginian was continually falling in or falling out of love.
He was barely In his teens when ho •et about penning verses. Poetry, however, was aiiparently the wrong route to the heart of Mary Bluud. of Westmorelaud, who proudly reservetl ber smiles, but whom Washingiou re¬ ferred to for years as his "Lowlauu Beauty."
But ronstuniy was not a virtue In the eyes of tile fourleeu-yfarold Washiugion.
In less thau u year he bud beeu iu love with two others—Miss J.uiy Qrymes aud a uauieless luiss whom he uddresBod as "JJcar Sally."
The heroine of the uext eugioKsiUK affair was -Miss Mary C'ary. a eon- neetlou ot Ihe Tairfuxes. ' yet he flually succumbed to tbe new attraction and Ihc alTalr with Miss Gary continued for several years.
Callant youth though he was, Washington did not always find favor with the maidens uf whose charms he was so promptly susceptible.
There was. for iustauce. a Miss Betsy ranntleroy. of Kichnioud. with whom, iu \"C WasbiuKlou fell ard¬ ently lu love, but whom be iu vain besuuglii to revoke ber "fornier cruel •entence."
But all this was the mere appreu- tleeshlp at love—a preliminary school Ing In tile world of women.
