I Career of a Capitalist. |
n By Eduar T. KlelJ.
HAD long haJ a (le(.ire tu becume a capitalist. Lu¬ cille teeuieJ t o
think it smart to Uugh at me for this extremely lamlable aud per¬ fecily nataral amhilion. As for her, she wasleil her stilisltnoe in riotout living, speuding every oeut of her salary on opera tiokets, imported toilet artiolet and torloni biicnit with a reokleit disregard for the future that coald only metn one thing, namely, matrimouial hopes.
And to tell the trnth, Lnoille was attraotire enough to warrant her liav. ing some hopes in this direction, and conid have had ber pick any time from half a dozen yonng fellows, each oneof whom got almostan much salary as the did.
Bnt that bas nothing to do witb my own ambitions, wbicb were of a very different sort. I say were, (or I'm not so aure about tbem now, my flrat experience as a capitalist baviug ratber tiuseUlod my vieivuof life (or tbe tiue being.
I was Tery young indeed wben I firat (orwed my ideas as to the ilesira- bility o( wealth. It was way back in my childhood wben old Mr, Higginson used to como to chnrcb in bit great (nr-lined OTercoat and dirty liuou, and I obeotved bow tbe minister anit the eldort crowded aronnd him to shake his baud, when be was such a hate(nl old cnruiudgeou tbat I bad nrirately thought the Lord onght to aaTO made sume sort of a public apology (or perpetrating bim on tbo eommunily,
"Uh, Higginson bts got a lot of inoney out at intereat," my fatber wonld IBT wben I ventured to wonder why poople mado snoh a (nss over a dirty and disagreeable old man.
Wbat a marvelous power "money ont at interest" rontt be, I tbongbl, when it can trantlorm eren Mr. Hig- ginton inlo an acceptable companion. .\nd HO at tbat e.irly age I was made aoqnaiuted with the potency ol wealth, and I retolved that some day I, too, shonld have "money out at intereit," Wheu I was made bead stenographer in a big law olBoe I considered my ambition as good as realized. It bad seemed so far away before tbat I'd never tried to save Tery much, but now that it was (airly withiu uiy reach I begnn to lay ap money at a (rantic rulo.
"If you get another raise in your salary you'll he su stiugy you'll take to lunching out of the mucilage buttle and wearing yonr bicycle suit to church," ileclared Lucille in disgust. But I jnst let her jeer aud kept ou eounomiziug, aud at last there came a day when T htd Sl.'iUU iu tbe bauk. Mr. .\dninii, a (rieud o( my (atber's, invested it (or m« iu a Hrat mdrtgago ou H suburban ootlago, nud when ^ttie papers woro signed I weul home fluHhod nud triumphant.
"C.iiigiatulateme, Lucille,"! criod, throwing myself into a chair aud my hat on tho couch. "I haf inveshti- gated mein moneys."
Lucillo was trimming a hat lo wear to the theatre that nigbt, one of thuau silly white tulle affairs that t tingle shower will trausforiu into au imita- tiuu custard pie betore your yery Byes,
"Huh!" sho exclaimed, "I beliero yon thiuk you've done something really Hue. Hara Dnuuing, if you dou't look out, your (aoe will grow bard just like Mr. Higgiusuu's."
"What do I care?" I retorted gayly. "I've got mouey unt at interest, I.u- oille. Do you realize what thtt menus?"
"It meant that you're worked like n slare tud denied yourself of pleas¬ ure (or a year and a ball to get it, aud you're as thin as a shad and yellow at a lemou. Come ou and go to Ibe the¬ atre to-night aud (oiget tbat you're a capitalitt long enongh to eujoy your- tolf, that't a (tear."
But Iho loTer waa in my blood, and I wouldn't listen to ber.
So I went un putting muuey iu the bank and looked (orwaid eagerly lo the (ime wben the iuterest on my in- Testmeut wonld begin tu cume in.
It wat paid prumptly enough the first quarter aud the secnnd. Theu it Itpaed, Six months went by tod uu intereit.
"It teemt to me," remarked Lu¬ cille one dty, "that you'd better 'iu- Tettigata' tbat money in dcad ear¬ nest."
"Oh, don't worry yonrseK," I re¬ torted, antppisbly. I wts nerroui of late, and beiidet, Mr. Higginson wts allowed to lie at orott as be liked, I remembered.
"Well, it't a great thing to hare money out at interest." ahe rrspoudr.l airily, tilling her tailor hat orer her note and thtking uul her rustling tkirta preparatory to going out She wat really ontrttteoutly prutty.
At tne .loor the mel some one com¬ ing iu. .K pale, forlotn-l(x>king ol.l woman, with a piuche.I tmoo aud an appearance o( hariug cried for six months.
"It tbit Mils Dnntiiug?" ihe atked.
I attured ber it wts, an.l ahe pro¬ ceeded timidly alKiat Ibat mortgage
yonr agent sent me word yon intended to foreclose. Oh, Miss Dunning, dou't. Please don't be so bard on OS. My poor bnsband baa betn sick in bnd for a year, and i( we loie oar little bome it will kill him."
Here the poor ereaturu burst out crying, and I reached (or my hand- kelchiel, (eeling somehow that being a capitalist wasn't sach (un at i'd imagined.
"Ob, Miss Dunning," proceeded my gnest, ts soou as ube was able to speak, "if you kuew how bard we worked to build that house. We put the savings o( yeara iuto it, thinking that in our old age we've have n rool over onr heads. And uuw we must lote it all."
A (resb burst o( sobbing interrupted ber, and I swallowed a succession ol whal teemed lo be oolilileatones. I tried to think what Mr. Higginsou wonld bare done in such au einer gency, aud wondered if be ever (elt as mncb like a chicken tbie( as I did at that momeut.
"Why, don't cry." I maunged to say at last, "I'll uot deprive you ol a home. I only bought the mort¬ gage as an inveslmeut. you kuow,"
H«re I was actually apologizing (oi having "money out at interest." The poor woman weut away a little com. (orted at last, and I weut to bed with a nerrous headuube.
I rather lost interest in my mort¬ gage after that. I .lidn't sleep -nell for some reason, and wheu I did doze a Iitlle my dreams were bannted by weeping old ladies, I got a bad habit of going iuto a brown study at incon- veuieut times, and would start guilt¬ ily wben spoken to suddenly.
One day I got a uute (rom Mr, Adams saying be was goiug to (ore- close as once, and assuring me thai I'd get my mouey all right—1 needn't worry. Somehow I didn't find the assurance comlorting, and went bome wilbout auy appetite (or snpper.
"May the Lord preserve ino (rom erer becoming a capitalist I,' cried Lu¬ cille, looking at my (niw tt I sat try- ing to read ader supper, "You look, my dear, (or all the world like Judai Iscarlot after he was (ound out. A (nneral would be che^lul heside you. Thank goodness Bob is coming to- nigbt,"
Hob is Lucille's xonsin, a youn^ lawyer, and tbe jolliest boy going. But alas I wben be came. Bob was iu tbe blues, too. He sighed like a (ur. nane every few moments, and Anally announced that be couldn't stay,
"I want lo seo a man uamed Adnmi about a mortgage," be said, asd ] turned cold all over.
It's tbe saddest case I ever heard of," bo weut on, "Au old couple whe nre clieuts o( mine bad a mortgage on their home. II was bought a year oi uo ago by some shmk or uther,"
I covered my oyes with my hand just bore, and Lucille coughed iu au embarrassing way. But Bob noticed nothiug and proceeded in a troubled tone:
"01 course, tbey couldn't keep up tbe interest. WhoeTer bought tbe mortgage knew they couldn't. Buch people always figure on that, you know, and uow the poor old chap haa gone crazy over losing bis bume^ clean daffy, you know—and his poor wi(e will be turned out unless sume. thing is doue,"
There was a dead silence (or a mo. meut when be stopped, and tben I got np witliout a word, and, going to my deak, unlocked tbe drawer where I kept the precious mortgage. Witb trembliug fingers I seized my pen and with a (ew strokes canceled the mort¬ gage, and as I did so a load rolled oft my heart.
"Hero," I cried eagerly to tbe mys¬ tified Bub, "take this to that poor woman, iiuick, to-uigbt,"
"Ob, Sara," cried Lucille, "you worked so bnrd for that money."
"So has she," I said. "Aud I am youug and strong, while she is old aud helpless. Ob, Lucille, i( yon knew how I've bated myseK lately." Lucille took luo in her arms, and tben explained tbinga lo Bob, wbile I cried a lillle, though I coul.ln't help thiukiug what Mr. Higginsou would have said at ray behavior.
We gut Rob off at last, as btppy as a lord, aud theu Lucille embraced me again.
"You were nerer cut ont (or a capi¬ talist. I knew it nil the time," she cried, Iriiimpbanlly,
"Thouk you, dear," I said, meekly. "Au.l aoy, Lucillt-, lefa go lo bear Maudu .\.laiu8 to-night."
"Why," she exelHitned, hcr eyes ns liigaa saucers, "tbo prices nre wuy up in O,"
"Wbo cares?" I said, "I'm ri.'ber to-uighl than I've been (or years." Aud we went.
