According to the Brooklyn Fagle the fence is fifteen foet high and sure is a "cockerino" whatever that means. Dr. Myrick consitlera the ex¬ isting conditions made the fence a ne¬ cessity.
F. A. Myrick informs us that he wished positively to deny that the fence he had erected is a "spite" fence. 'I stood abuse and annoyance to my wife ami self more than two vears and simply ignored the woman until it became so bad I decided to stand it no longer. The fence was simply put up for protection against these anntiyances and if she will sign a bond to mind her own business and leave ua entirely alone I am willing to take down the fence."

.•\ sign on top of Public School No. 2, which is just at the entrance to the vilbnge. Would be a good idea, wording for instance Freeport School No. 2, whch would indicate to the people en¬ tering the village from the north that they were in Freeport and that this was only a part of the school facility. The outlay would be small for the benefit derived.
A reaiier asks what time the six o'clock whistle blows and what it blows for. I am willing to be obliging but I can't answer cither of these questions. One night recently I was in my office when the Freeport whistle blew and at my home on Pine street when the Rock¬ ville Centre whistle blew, both sup- jiosed to blow at the same time.
Speaking about the tax aale, which the local village Board of Trustees has instructed Clerk Shea to prepare copy for without giving him the help neces¬ sary to get the list out, the folltiwing clipping might be of interest, from a recent number of the Brooklyn Eagle, showing tho moral effect a real tax sale would havo in inducing our people who neglect theso matters to pay up. This article refers to a sale in Suffolk Cou.-.ty :
Theio are some prominent btisines.s people who for some reastin now and thon let their property go in the sale. For instance, George \V. Heatly of Wading River and Brooklyn has four parcels in this year a sale. Nearly ev¬ ery year some of his ]iroperty is ad¬ vertised for sale. This is good prop¬ erty, too. And every year he pays up just before tho sale takes place. Why he does this is a mystery for il would be far cheaper tu pay the taxes when due than to wait and pay all the costs adtled for the sale.
This year tho line property of Des- montl Dunne, on Main street, River- nead, a house and lot he bought from W. W. DeBevoise of Brooklyn, was advertised for sale for unpaid taxes, but the tax was paid a day or two ago. Another very prominent man who failed to pay last year was J. G. Robin, tlie well-known banker antl capitalist. He has a $200,000 country estate at Baiting Hollow, Riverbead ttiwii. lie paitl up yesterday.
There are dozens and dozens of oth¬ ers in the same cla.ss men who know that taxes are due every year, yet for some unexplained reason they forget it. It ia a safe bet, too, that the col¬ lector sends these people tax bills, for it "means something," in dollars and cents tt) him if he can collect it.
To those acquainted with the work¬ ings of the case, the word tbat Dr. Etiwin ("arman has been removed by tho State Health Commissioner as Health Officer ot the Village of Freo- ptirt tfoes not cause surprise. The opinion was exprest after the hearing before the secretary of the State De¬ partment, held in Freeport on July 21, that this action would result; this idea being received, not from the testimony ailduced, but from the attitude of the State Department. The matter was advertise ambiguously, proper notice was not given Dr. Carman and the Board of Health, and the "secretary" dispoied of but very little evidence ex¬ cept that submittetl by Dr. Evans, who made the complaints against Dr. Car¬ man, and, who, knowing the case Was to come up, had his witnesses on hand, while the local Health Boartl was en¬ tirely unprepared.
It ia atlmitted Dr. Carman ilid not live up tt) the strict letter of the law but if the State Board of Heaith re¬ moves every man who does not attend to his duties as gotxl as Dr. Carman doea he will not be able to procure Health officers enough for the towns of the State, to say nothing of the vil¬ lage*.
The attitude of the State Depart¬ ment ia illustrated in the action re¬ garding the Board of Health. They sent word to the local village Board recommending that the Board of Health be removed for incompetency and when the Board asked for a copy of the teatimony at the hearing of the .State Board they were told to buy it of the'official stent)gra|»her. They haven't done it.
Tbe State Health Commiasioner has satisfied the "dignity" of hia depart¬ ment by removing Dr. Carman. It is now up to the village Board of Health to uphold the dignity of the Village of Freeport by appointing aa Dr. Car¬ man's auccesaor. Dr. Edwin Carman, than whom there ia no more competent officer in any village in the atate.
It ia suggeated that there be a good repreaentation of citizena at the meet¬ ing of tbe Village Board of Truateea : Friday evening when the qoeation of. appointing Dr. Carman'a auccesaor will probably be discussed by the Village Board or the Health Board.

. serious injury, and one of tliem. George Beartlsloy, aged :;•") years, is at his home in Seaman avenue, this place, seriously hurt as the resull'of the fall¬ ing of a scaffold in the new Catholic Church at the corner of Pine street and Ocean avenue, Friday afternoon.
