The Fire Department was calle:l out last Friday morning. A barrel of pa¬ per in A. A. Webster's residence, •Merrick Hoad and Crove St., caught tire, but was discovered just. iTk time to prevent the building catching' lire. The alarm was very indistinct but the firemen rnatle ijuick time. When they arrived^the blaze had been extinguish¬ ed ; no damage.
"Considerable smoke with no fire" seems the best way of speaking of the Miitter of irranting a license to the i.i.iprietor of the ".Airflonic" to run hiraiii this .Sunidnier.
.\- far as the X'iJltme P-!oard was cor,CLT:iL'd tiic application went through the routine of similar reijuests. Mr. Nugent asked for a license to run liis moving jiicture show as was done last Summer, in the ".Airdome" opposite the Freeport Club House. The jietition was luid over till the next mec'ting of the Board in onler to oonsider the proji¬ er jirice for the liccn.^e, and has not been "held up" as some parties inter¬ ested in making a rumpus pretend to think.
But in the nieaiitinie the "press iam Lewis of Raynor Street agent" for another local ainu;sement it house got busy and a pajier in a neigh- 'boring village took uj) the matter and urged all citi/.ens tried and true, "vvith the intere.st of the village at heart" to op[io.se the granting of this license when it came before the Board of Trustees for action, and stating that a special meeting of the Board was to be held last Friilay night to ."ettle the matter (which was not true as nil meet¬ ing was held and none called). The article claimed that Mr. Sigmond had made an expenditure of about ¦'i'll,0()() and should be jirotected at the expense of all other events, especially thi.s one, because it was run on a "cheap" scale. This was the same show given here last Summer wheti the same newsjiajier several times gave mention of its good shows and of the crowds attending.
Then another interested party was indiscreet in taking around a jietition asking people to sign what we un¬ derstand was a recjuest to the V'illage Board not t(j grant the license. This of course, did not reflect the o|iiniun of the Village Board as a Board at all.
We might say further that one of the members of the Board told us la.st week that there was no (juestion before the Board as to granting the license ~- it would surely be given.
The Board of Trustees recognize the
fact thu^ Mr. Nugent's show was here
first,' that the performances were
first-class, and that largo

The Public .Service Commission of the Second Department will meet Fri¬ day Jiifternoon at Fraternity Hall, to try the case of Elvin N. Edwards against the Long Island Railroad rela¬ tive to protecting the railroad cross¬ ings in Freeport.
This is the matter, it will be re¬ called, that Counselor Edwards took up with the Public Service Commission after several jieople had been killed at Bayview Avenue. Counselor Ed¬ wards contends that in a village the size of Freejiort, all th^; crossings should be properly guarded during the busy parts of the day.

The two sjjeakers rejircsenting the Freeport High School, .Miss Florence C. Stiles, daughter of .Mr. and .Mrs. Esmond Stiles, of Freejiort, and Wil¬ liam F. Kraft, son of .Mr. and .Vlrs. W. F. Ttie girls second jirize was won by Miss Lulu Margaret Stowe from Hemjistead High, and the other second was won by Har- olfl Haegney, of the Ro kville Centre school.
The tirst event of the tve;iiMg, al¬ though not on the jirograin, was the yells and school .songs from the Hemp¬ stead. Kockville (Jentre and Freeport sections. Owiiig to the distance from home there wa:s no Huntington cheer¬ ing suction. These sections were the feature of the evening. One section would start up their yells and atiother sertion would iittenijit to cheer thom down.
.Another feature of the evening was the singing by the (lirls' (Jhorus of Freeport. There were aiiout fifty voices.'
The first number on the jirograrn was music by Miss Marion Gildersleeve on the jiiano, and T. A. (Jardona, both of Hempstead, on the violin, followed by .Miss (."ora E. Dole, of Huntington, who recited "The ("hristnias Sub.stitute," by Packard. Miss (Jole sjioke in an excellent manner, but her voice was a little luw, so that some of the words were lost to the listeners in the rear of the building. There seemed to be the same trouble with Miss .Margaret Helen Fortescuc of Rockvilie Centre, who sjioke last. Mr. Kraft's voice, jn-onunciation and jjosi- tion were all that could be desired. The other numbers on the program were: "The Chariot Race." Harold Haegney; "Herve Kiel," .Alfred (i. About Village Affairs
When (leorge Wallace was village president several years ago a change was made in the rates for water where¬ by because a consumer used a large jiipe he had to jjfiy nmre for water —not more for a larger iiuantity but more per tlviusand gallons.
Take for in>ta!Kc where consumer uses a half inch Jiijie, he has to pay ;50c Jier thousand gallons till ho buys Sli worth of water; then he can get it for 2Uc a gallon; if however he bajijicns to want a faucet on his lawn he must buy $14 worth of water at .'30c before he can get tho benefit of the reduction; that is not so bad however; but if he puts in a one-inch service jiijio wishing to use more water he must buy :i^l8 worth of water at .'^oc; then he can use as much as he wants at 2(ic.
The way tho jirices for water was fixed seems a big humbug and the Jiresent village board -houid have them amended at once. As it stands now the more wator a man uses the mure he has to Jiay jier gallon, which we think all will admit is an "awfully fuiinv" way o!" doing iiu.-ines;-.
