A Message from
Supervisor John Venditto
Regarding the Progress at
Bethpage Community Park
Dear Resident:
The Town of Oyster Bay has taken a very proactive role in the cleanup
of the underlying soil contamination in Bethpage Community Park. In the
portion of the park under the Town's jurisdiction for remediation purposes,
the cleanup, wherein the contaminated soil is removed and replaced with
clean material, is nearly completed. Construction of the new ice skating
rink will commence shortly while remediation is in the final stage.
It had been hoped that the pool would be open for the 2007 summer season.
This was predicated on Northrop Grumman Corporation permitting the
Town alternate access from the south end of the park to allow residents to
enter the pool area. Unfortunately, all attempts by both the Town of Oyster
Bay and the Bethpage School District to persuade Northrop Grumman to let
the Town open an access on the south end failed. The corporation's refusal
to cooperate has placed the Town in a position where the only access to the
site is the one currently being used for construction purposes. It would simply
not be safe to allow the general public to use this access; which goes
directly through the remediation/construction site, as work continues.
With regard to the construction of the new ice skating facility, we are still
on track to open it in early 2008. There has been a slight delay in the start
of construction due to the remedial contractor encountering a large volume
of additional material, mostly in the form of various types of debris including
metal, wood, rubber, hydraulic hoses, tires and manufacturing forms.
These items required disposal sites other than those already being used for
contaminated soil, not to mention additional time to remove and replace
with clean material. Changes to the existing remediation contract and
schedule were necessary, which, in turn, delayed the start of rink construction.
While the pool and park are closed, my Town Board colleagues and I have
taken steps to insure that Bethpage residents enjoy all the summer programs
and facilities the Town has to offer. You are invited to use all of the other
three community pool facilities...Plainview-Old Bethpage, Marjorie R. Post
in Massapequa or Syosset-Woodbury...for the same price as a Bethpage
pool membership. Registration for the pools is now underway. For information,
contact the Parks Department at 797-4129.
Bethpage Community Park District youngsters are welcome to join the
Summer Recreation Program at any of the other Town or community park
facilities. For locations and information, contact the Parks Department at
797-4185 or 797-4173.
The "Music Under the Stars" concert series, always a highlight of the
summer season, will be held in the auditorium of the John F. Kennedy
Middle School on Broadway. Consult your Summer Program 2007, which
will be mailed to you the end of May, or the Town's Web site, www.oyster-baytown.
com, for a listing of this summer's great performances.
Ensuring the safety of residents is our top priority. As always, thank you for
your continued patience and cooperation. If you have any questions, please
contact Phyllis Barry in the Public Information Office, 624-6390.
Very truly yours,
John Venditto
Town Supervisor
