Poppy Month is Approaching
The History of the
''Buddy" Poppy Campaign
The Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States was the first
organization to promote a nationwide distribution of poppies assembled
by disabled and needy Veterans.
To substantiate this claim and to dispel any claims to the contrary, the
following chronological and documentary information is briefly outlined.
In 1921, the Franco-American Children's League conducted a nationwide
distribution of poppies made in France, for the benefit of children in
the war-torn areas of France and Belgium. The inspiration came from Col.
John McCrae's poem "In Flanders Field".
In October 1921 the .American Legion at its convention in Kansas city-repudiated
its actio;"i o\' 1920 in choosing the poppy as its official flower
and substituted the daisy.
[n Ma) 1922, the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States conducted
a nationwide distribution of poppies made in France. This was
after the dissolution of the Franco-American Children's League and in
response to an appeal by Madam Guerin, "The Poppy Lad)' from France."
[n October 1922, following the first nationwide distribution of poppies
b) the VFW, the American Legion Convention repudiated the daisy as its
official flower and again adopted the poppy.
[n the spring of 1923, the American Legion conducted its first nationwide
sale of poppies made by a french manufacture!-.
In 1923, the Veterans of Foreign Wats evolved the idea which resulted
in the VFW "Buddy" Poppy fashioned by disabled and needy Veterans
who were paid for their work in assembling "Buddy" poppies.
[n February 1924 the \ FW registered the name ' Buddy ' Popp) with
the I IS Patenl Office and still holds all trademark rights in the name
"Buddy" under the classification of artificial flowers.
Since Ma) 1924, the Veterans of Foreign Wars ol the ; nited States
has annual 1) conducted a "Buddy" Popp) campaign.
Butehorn Brothers VFW Post 4987 will be out ver) soon with shea
"Buddy" poppies, rhe month of Ma) has been designated as "Buddy '
Popp) month since the "Buddy" poppy was adopted by the Veterans <>i
foreign Wars. We are very fortunate that our area has always responded to
the call for aiding the Bethpage Post with donations to help the VFW with
funding their communit) projects. Cur community has been exceptionally
generous with us. We certainly thank you for all that you have done for
us. We have projects that in these times, empty our treasury and out wonderful
community replenishes all that we have used at "Poppy" time.
Some of our community projects include the Memorial Day Parade,
Voice of Democracy Essay Contest, hospital visits to the Veterans and
Memorial Day cemetery visits. We are ver) proud of our Voice ol
Democracy Essay Contest which is held for local children and gives them
a chance to be recognized for their writing ability as well as provides
them with monetary prizes and even scholarships for college. Each winner
is recognized by our elected officials who present them with awards
as well. As was stated before, all of these projects require funding and the
Butehorn Bros Post 4987 is very grateful for all of the support we receive
from the wonderful residents of our community.
Si) be on the lookout because very soon we will be selling our
"Buddy" Poppies once again during the month of Mas. We hope you will
show your support by wearing a "Buddy" Poppy, which in turn helps to
support the many projects that are sponsored by the Butehorn Brothers
VFW Post 4C)S7. A heartfelt and hardy thank you from all of us to all ol'

A very dynamic, courteous and dedicated American Rock and Roll band
has recently written and composed a CD recording dedicated to our soldiers in
Iraq and Afghanistan. The name of the band is "Brian Chris" and the title of the
new CD is "Fight for the Cause." The music is awe inspiring and depicts all of
the problems associated with the battlefields and house to house fighting. War is
hell and oui soldiers are taking the full brunt of it. We at home recognize this and
support our troops as much as we can to help keep their morals high and their
il ; bright.
! he Brian Chris Band's home base is Tampa, Florida, however, their lead gui-st
is Chuck Morrongiello, formed) from Bethpage, Long Island, New York
i Chuck studies music at love Towns College and performed in the early NO's with
the "Strange Brew Band", which was considered the best rock and roll band in
Long Island.
View the video "Brian Chris Band" on the Internet at
www.Youtube.com/Brian Chris Video. The links can be viewed by the public and
the CD is reasonably priced. Mr. Fingers, account executive and senior editor of
the radio station WBAB-102.3FM (Rock & Roll) has set up a listening schedule
allocated to the Brian Chris Band . Play time is as follows: April 13, Friday at
I 1:45pm and on .April 16, Monday at 11:45pm, which will give the Brian Chris
Band world wide listening capability.
This talented and dedicated band has indicated to the press that 100 CDs will
be donated to the Veteran's Administration and U.S.O., who will arrange for shipment
of the CD to our well deserved soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Although this story came to us at the Tribune late in the day on Wednesday,
we felt that although many will not receive it before the first airtime, it was certainly
well deserving of the publicity. BEst of luck to the "Brian Chris Band" and
we commend them for keeping our troops in their hearts and minds through their
music.
