Tactical Units Train at Bethpage High School
Nassau County Police Special Operations Instructor Tim Marinace is welcomed
by Bethpage Superintendent of Schools Dr. Richard S. Marsh,
Bethpage Schools Director of School Facilities, Operations, and
Transportation Kim Parahus, and Nassau County Special Operations
Sergeant John Carney.
Law enforcement tactical units from the Nassau County Police
Department and various village departments gathered at Bethpage
High School during the recent mid-winter recess to practice emergency
formations and safety procedures as part of the Bureau of
Special Operations "Rapid Deployment Training."
While the students were on vacation, more than 30 officers participated
in drills, responding to simulated active shooter situations. This
included how to proceed through hallways, doorways, and main areas
of a school building (such as an auditorium) while conducting searches
for armed intruders. The goal of the exercise was to train officers to
navigate effectively, slay out of the intruder's line of fire, but most
importantly, keep the civilians as safe as possible in the event an
armed assailant enters the high school.
"Different school districts have different protocols," said Nassau
County Police Special Operations Instructor Tim Mannacc, who led
the training with Nassau County Special Operations Sergeant John
Carney. "During lockdown drills, we teach kids to hide while the
police sweep the building until the situation is controlled."
Bethpage Superintendent of Schools l)\. Richard S. Marsh and
Bethpage Schools Director of School Facilities, Operations, and
Transportation Kim Parahus stopped by to welcome the units and
observe some of the procedure in place. The District was pleased to
oiler its facility for this important training.
