Bethpage High School Congratulates
National Merit Semifmalists
Bethpage Guidance Counselor Jennifer Payne, National Merit
Semifinalist Kevin Sackel, Guidance Director Pam Puglisi, National Merit
Semijinalist Joseph Niczky, and Guidance Counselor Meg Scanlon.
Bethpage High School students Kevin Sackel and Joseph Niczky were
named National Merit Semifmalists. Kevin and Joseph, both seniors, earned
this status based on their PSAT scores.
The National Merit Scholarship Program is an academic competition
that recognizes about 16,000 semifmalists each year. These selected
students are eligible to become finalists with the prospect of eventually
receiving scholarship awards.
Kevin and Joseph are high achieving, well-rounded students with a
strong school involvement that makes them each deserving of this honor.
Kevin is involved in the High School's Student Civic Association, Spanish
Club, Mathlctes, Robotics Club, Tri-M Music Honor Society, and Band.
Joseph participates in the Spanish Club, Cross-Country Swim Team, and
Track Team. Both students are also National Honor Society members.
Congratulations to Kevin and Joseph, and best of luck in making it

Bethpage Black US OPEN 2009
Artwork on Display
You can meet world-renowned golf artist, Elaine Thompson, at her artist reception,
on Sunday, September 28, 2008 from 12 noon to 5 PM. The event takes place
at Palmer's American Grille, 123 Fulton Street in Farmingdale, New York. She was
commissioned by the United States Golf Association to paint the "2009 U.S. Open at
Bethpage" poster. There is no admission charge. For information call (516) 420-
0609. In case you can't make this weekend's show Elaine's beautiful work can also
be seen on November 1 at St. Anthony's Fine Art Show, 275 Wolf Hill Rd., South
Huntington and on December 6, 7 at the Art League of L.I. Fine Art Show, Elwood
Middle School, 478 Elwood Rd., East Northport. Prints are available at the Pro Shop
at Bethpage State Park, both framed and unframed.
Thompson spent two months painting the magnificent oil painting of The Black
Course 18th green with the clubhouse in the background. The fairway undulations
have a 3-dimensional photo-realistic look with intense colors. In the foreground is a
painting of the live 2009 U.S. Open logo including an 11-year-old caddie in vintage
attire. The model was Jamie Mas from Sayville, New York. Thompson is also managing
the poster's printing and packaging.
Thompson graduated from SUNY Farmingdale, right next to the Bethpage golf
course. She is a life long resident of the Bohemia/Sayville, N.Y. area. Thompson
was selected from several artists invited to submit designs. Her reaction, when she
received the news was, "1 feel it is a great honor to have been selected. 1 feel like 1
won the Grand Slam."
Thompson is well known for her golf art. She painted the 2004 Shinnecock Hills
Golf Club and the 2006 Winged foot Golf Club U.S. OPEN posters. Her fust commemorative
golf painting was the 2002 historical "The Black Course - Bethpage
Ovei the Years." Last year she painted "The Lady Golfer at Timber Point, New
York.
Also at the artist reception will be Thompson's other paintings and prints featur
