Hats Off to the CLASS OF 2008!
Inspired and Equipped to Make a Difference
Congratulations to the Bethpage High School Class of 2008
Bethpage High School celebrated its 53rc* Annual High School
Graduation Commencement Exercise on Sunday, celebrating the
Class of 2008 and sending seniors off to college with the knowledge
and experience to succeed in the 21s t Century.
Superintendent of Schools Dr. Richard Marsh led a host of guest
speakers in the congratulations, noting that the Class of 2008 earned
the highest number of Regents Diplomas of any Bethpage High
School class ever. Dr. Marsh advised graduates that although we live
in a digital age reliant on email and text messaging, they should make
every attempt to communicate verbally and if possible, face-to-face
with family, friends, and others, and never lose sight of the community
in which they were raised and the people who inspired them along
the way.
"You are more than just Golden Eagles.. .you are members of
some wonderful families and part of a great community," added
Bethpage High School Principal John DeTommaso, who proudly
noted that this is his fourth graduating class as principal, with every
class achieving higher levels than the class before.
"We've helped each other, cried together, but most of all, we have
grown together," said Student Council President Courtney LaSpina,
who noted the diversity of talents and achievements of her fellow
classmates and urged them to use the knowledge they have obtained
in Bethpage to take advantage of the endless number of opportunities
that exist in the world. Most importantly, Courtney advised them
"Never sell yourself short!"
Salutatorian Maymunah Syeda echoed these sentiments, lauding
the District's cutting-edge Biotech program, among others, before
thanking Dr. Marsh and the Board of Education for providing these
opportunities. "We will define our future and create it rather than idly
watch it go by," said Mayn nan, who noted that members of this
year's class have the tools ^ome the next scientist to cure a major
disease, or become electee ior government office. "It's a bit scary for
us, but it's also a truly electrifying moment...our lives are brimming
with opportunity."
Valedictorian Christine Kappel urged her fellow graduates to give
