On June 8, 2008 a severe thunderstorm hit Bethpage bringing with it dangerous lightening,
wicked thunder, high winds, hail and drenching downpours. This powerful storm hit
our area around 6pm and left battered trees, damaged vehicles and downed power lines in
it's wake. The storm uprooted and damaged over 130 trees at Bethpage State Park and
necessitated the closing of three of the park;s five golf courses on June 9. In fact the storm
sent a tree crashing on top of a car that was leaving the picnic area at the park, trapping 2
people inside. Luckily the Bethpage Fire Department was able to remove the occupants
from the vehicle with only minor injuries. Trees were downed on Broadway, Caroline
Street, Barbara Street, Miami Road,Plainview Road and many other roadways in our town.
It was estimated that over 20,000 LIPA customers were without power. More pix inside.

Power wires like the one laying across this vehicle could be found
all over Bethpage causing power outages.
