...Because HOPE is What It's All About...
Bethpage s Relay For Life Raises Over $145,000 in the Fight Against Cancer
Everyone has in some way been
effected by the word cancer. Yet there
are some things that cancer cannot
effect and that is the spirit, the desire,
the commitment and above all the hope
that we all have in finding a cure. There
are so many people struggling with this
disease, so many stories of courage and
hope and one BIG story of a small
town called Bethpage that is making a
HUGE difference.
On May 31 over 1300 residents took
part in Relay for Life 2008 and each
and every participant should take great
pride in knowing they made a difference,
by raising over $145,000 in our
second year of Relay for Life.
Survivors were applauded as they
began the very first lap of the night and
although rain and storms were in the
forecast, I can tell you that when those
survivors took to the track for their first
lap they were greeted by sunshine.
After their tribute lap was completed all
participants were asked to take the next
lap and the track at Bethpage High
School turned into an ocean of residents
determined to make this night
count! Tents filled the football field and
no amount of rain would have stopped
this crowd from making Relay 2008 a
huge success.
To try and explain what Relay is
like is almost impossible. It's emotional,
spiritual, hopeful and awe inspiring.
And we should all be so proud that
Bethpage is a Relay community. What
that means is that we have a goal and a
role in helping people with their struggle
with cancer, paying tribute to those
who lost their battle and vowing to one
day make our world cancer free by
fighting back.
Sure it's a tough goal but last Friday
night, Bethpage proved we are more
determined than ever. There are so
many people to thank. The list is endless,
but above all we have to thank
Judy and Kevin Wichter for bringing
Relay to Bethpage. It is a huge undertaking
and the entire Relay committee
and every participant should be congratulated
for their hard work and
effort. We also have to thank the
Bethage School Distict for their help
and support as well. Relay highlights
the best of our community and together
we are changing the world one Relay
at a time. Please turn to the centerfold
for more Relay memories.
