Take Top Honors in County Math Tournaments

BIG BROWN to the Kentucky Derby
JFK Middle School's Math Counts Team finished first place in Nassau County

Members of High School Mathletes won first place and took home the trophy
at she Nassau County Interscholastic Mathematics League's Nassau County

'! he Bethpage High School Mathletes Teams were simply the best at the
Nassau ('ounty [nterscholastic Mathematics League's County Math
tournament The I ppei Division team (eleventh and twelfth graders) won the
Nassau ('ounty I itle. while the Lower Division team (ninth and tenth graders)
finished 9th among its competitors. Bethpage's Lsi place achievement at the
tournament was notable, beating its closest competitoi b) nine points. Not to
be outdone, John F. Kennedy Middle School's "Math Counts'" Team has had a
tremendous year, calculating its way to become the top team in Nassau County.
Created by the Foundation for Engineering in Education, "Math Counts1' is a
vino in which students gather to challenge themselves and expand their knowledge
m the subject of mathematics.

began when co-advisors Lauren Andrews and Leon I aSpina challenged seventh
and eighth jradc students with an mnual scho< C\ ide competition.
Students finishing as the top eight competitors earned the opportunity to represent
the school at the Nassau County Competition, held at Hofstra University
m February. The two teams of lour representing the Middle School included
Patrick Cao, Holly Josephs, Jerry Kim, and Nikhil Goyal; as well as Akash

Nassau Downs OTB partnered with its "Fast Track" off-track wagering
restaurant B.K. Sweeney's Parkside Tavern in Bethpage in Honoring two
Long Island entrepreneurs, Michael lavarone. a Bethpage native, and Richard
J, Schiavo ofWestbury, proud owners of champion racehorse. Big Brown, the
early favorite in the Kentucky Derby, Saturday, May 3.
Mr. lavarone and Mr. Schiavo are Co Presidents of International
Equine Acquisitions Holdings (IEAH), making final decisions on the selection
and purchasing of all horses. IEAH acquired a 75% interest in Big Brown following
a huge September win in Saratoga. The undefeated Big Brown burst
onto the scene with a visually impressive Florida Derby victory last month in
just his third career race.
B.K. Sweeney's and Nassau Downs hosted the racehorse owners'
send-off on Thursday April 24, 2008 in a 1 ouisvillc-stvlc celebration w ;th
"Mint Juleps" and "Hot 'Big Brown' Sandwiches." Nassau OTB offered each
lad) a red rose to commemorate the 2008 Kentucky Derb) "Run foi the
Roses". Patrons at B K Sweeney's played Nassau OTB's Spin the Vs heel,
winning Kentucky Derby memorabilia and giveaways. Horseracing enthusiasts
at B.K. Sweeney's enjoyed the festive atmosphere and wished Big Brown
victory in his Kentucky Derby run. lavarone and Schiavo signed autographs
and posed for pictures.
