Volume 44 Number 4 January 27 - February 2, 2006 FIFTY CENTS
Bethpage High School To Compete
Against Massapequa
In First Round of L.I. Challenge
The Bethpage team on the set of the Long Island Challenge (L to R):
Raman Madan, team captain Vinod Kasturi, Karan Sabharwal and Jeffrey
Katz.
A team of four contestants and one alternate from Bethpage High School will
challenge Massapequa in the first round of the ninth season of the Long Island
Challenge on Saturday, February 4. The competition, moderated by News 12
Anchor Scott Feldman, will be shown exclusively on News 12 Long Island at
6:30 pm and 9:30 pm, with encores airing the very next night, February 5, at
6:30 pm and 9:30 pm.
Bethpage High School is among 32 Long Island high schools chosen at
random from a field of 97 applicants to compete in the ninth season of The
Long Island Challenge, an academic quiz show designed to test students'
knowledge of math, science, literature, news and history.
"Cablevision is proud to support our young scholars and is committed to
providing quality local programming. The Long Island Challenge is a terrific
educational opportunity for both participants and viewers who enjoy playing
along at home. The students work very hard to prepare, and each half-hour
match is packed with excitement. We wish Bethpage and Massapequa good
luck as they face off in round one," said Dodie Tschirch, Cablevision's
Regional Vice President of Public Affairs.
Representing Bethpage High School will be team members Raman Madan,
team captain Vinod Kasturi, Karan Sabharwal, Jeffrey Katz and team alternate
Stephen Secchio. The team's academic advisor is Michelle Maio.
Continuing each week through June 2006, the show shines the spotlight on
the students' academic skills as they compete for approximately $20,000 in
prizes.
The 30-minute show is divided into rounds that include multiple-choice
questions and a lightning round, where teams try to answer 10 questions in 60
seconds. In the final round, teams can answer questions freely, but risk losing
10 points for any incorrect answers.
Through a series of elimination rounds, schools will progress through the
competition, culminating with the best team from Nassau County facing off
against the best team from Suffolk County for the Long Island Championship.
Then, in a first of its kind event, the best team from Long Island will face off
against the best team from New Jersey in an interstate Challenge
Championship. More information on The Long Island Challenge, including
standings, statistics and short contestant bios, will be available on www.pow
ertolearn.com as the tournament progresses. The Long Island Challenge is
sponsored in part by Nissan, Alure Home Improvements and LIPA.
