Bethpage Honored for
Best Tasting Water
••i
Bethpage Water Commissioners Bill Ellinger, John Sullivan and
Ciary Bretton proudly accepted the 2006 trophy for the Best Tasting
Water on Long Island. Last month Bethpage won the Nassau competition
and will compete for the New York State title in Syracuse in New
York City next week. 'This is the sixth time since 1989 that Bethpage
has been judged Long Island's best tasting water" stated Commissioner
Bill Ellinger. No other water district on Long Island has been rated
number one by random tasters more frequently than Bethpage.
Commissioner Sullivan noted that the district water is one of only 4
Long Island water supplies that is chlorine free. As a result, the chemical
smell and taste associated with some public and bottled water supplies,
is not present in Bethpage water. Chlorination is avoided since
Bethpage water is naturally free of contaminates that would require
chlorination. Commissioner Bretton added that Bethpage water is monitored
on a monthly basis for any contaminate which could cause a danger
to the public health. State regulations are less stringent than guidelines
set by the Bethpage Commissioners. No commercially bottled
water exceeds the purity of Bethpage water. In accepting the award, the
Commissioners said 'Bethpage water not only tastes good, but is safe
and inexpensive as well.

The first Labor Day holiday was celebrated on Tuesday, September 5, 1882, in
New York City, in accordance with the plans of the Central Labor Union. In 1884
the first Monday in September was selected as the holiday, as originally proposed,
and the Central Labor Union urged similar organizations in other cities to follow the
example of New York and celebrate a "workingmen's holiday" on that date. The idea
spread with the growth of labor organizations and in 1885 Labor Day was celebrated
in many industrial center of the country.
Through the years the nation gave increasing emphasis to Labor Day. The first governmental
recognition came through municipal ordinances passing during 1885 and
1886. From them developed the movement to secure state legislation. Tile first state
bill was introduced into the New York legislature, but the first to become law was
passed by Oregon on February 21, 1887. During the year four more states Colorado,
Massachusetts, New Jersey and New York created the Labor Day holiday by legislative
enactment. By the end of the decade Connecticut, Nebraska and Pennsylvania
followed suit. By 1894, 23 other states had adopted the holiday in honor of workers
and on June 28 of that year Congress passed an act making it the first morulas in
September of each year a, legal holiday in the District of Columbia and the territories.
Today Labor Day is a special day that we pause to remember the contributions
workers have made to the strength,, prosperity and well-being of our country. We
celebrate with backyard bar-be-ques, parades and family gatherings. It is also a da)
that each of us should give ourselves a well deserved pat on the back for the hard
work that each of us accomplish all year long. So gather up your family and friends
and celebrate Labor Day, the official last fling of the summer, with some well
deserved rest and relaxation
