Wicked Weather Hits Bethpage
Residents woke up to downed trees on their front lawns.
Branches and leaves cluttered this lawn on Stewart Avenue
This huge tree branch fell down on Stewart Avenue, fortunately no
one was hurt.
On Tuesday, July 18 a severe thunderstorm hit Long Island at approximately
10:30pm, bringing with it dangerous lightning, incredible wind
and torrential rain. The powerful storm downed many trees and power
lines and it was reported that over 50.000 LIPA customers were left without
power.
L1RR officials reported that the storm wreaked havoc with the railroad,
as lighting struck high tension poles and our neighbors to the easi in
Suffolk County reported winds so strong that many felt as though a tornado
had swept through the area.
Coming off two days of oppressive and record breaking temperatures
in the triple digits, the cool front, which came in last night and triggered
the thunderstorm, did break the heatwave a bit. Residents woke up to
cooler temperatures Wednesday morning, however many woke up to
downed trees and damage from the soaking rains and dangerous winds.
